The : The most common side effects of taking too much magnesium are diarrhea and abdominal cramping. The most serious would be kidney failure.

Signs of magnesium toxicity are: 
mental status changes
nausea
diarrhea 
appetite loss
muscle weakness 
difficulty breathing 
extremely low blood pressure 
irregular heartbeat

if you have any of these symptoms i suggest you see a doctor right away. 
For now it's probably a good idea to hold off on the magnesium supplements. There are many other options for menstraul cramps, your primary care provider will be able to decide what treatment is best for you.

YES: 300 mg of magnesium is adequate for adults. We also get magnesium from diet so taking additional supplementation can be toxic.

Low Magnesium: Low magnesium (m) levels can cause, muscle spasms, tics, weakness, low calcium and potassium blood levels as well as dangerous cardiac irregular heart rhythms. Patients on diuretics are more apt to develop this problem than those not on them. See your doctor for more advice, or if you have symptoms go to the nearest er for IV m administration.

No: In fact we have found that premature babies who receive magnesium have less bleeding in the brain.  Magnesium should be used cautiously because it can have rare but serious side effects in the mother such as too much water in the lungs.

Low magnesium: Low magnesium can be caused by: Alcoholism, Chronic diarrhea, intestinal diseases: celiac and inflammatory bowel dz, diet deficiency, meds: Diuretics, Prevacid (lansoprazole) and like acid inhibitors, chemotherapy, and certain antibiotics. Genetic defects of kidney tubules can cause low mag (Gitelmans), and excess aldosterone secretion by adrenals. Eval: 24 hour urine Mag, Ca, Sodium,  Potassium excretion

Magnesium and sleep: Magnesium (Mg) is found in a variety of foods.  If you eat a diverse diet (particularly high fiber foods), you will get plenty of Mg. The body regulates it quite well so unless you take Mg pills, there's no reason to worry about excess. As for sleep, Mg deficiency is associated with insomnia. So getting plenty of Mg from food is a good thing for sleep. Leafy greens, nuts, whole grains, seeds.

Probably OK: But check with your PCP.  Magnesium can help relax muscles of mastication during sleep. I would also suggest to combine with a soft thermoplastic mandibular nightguard.

Hypermagnesemia: This means high magnesium levels in blood. This can cause irregular heart rates which can be occasionally fatal (called ventricular tachycardia). The high levels are more likely to occur in persons with kidney disease.
