Accepted Answer

: It depends on the resolution of the CT and if they were both read by the same person. Discuss with your Drs. Remember how small 0.7 mm is. The lead in a #2 pencil is 10.3 mm in diameter,  then 0.7 mm is 14 times smaller than #2 lead.  If head is shot from a slightly different angle, then it may be missed.   Ask to be shown by your Dr on the X-ray so you can see. Check if it is 0.7 mm or 0.7 cm.

my son had mri that showed 8mm cyst on pineal gland in his brain. how concerning is this? he has to have a repeat scan in one year.

Pineal cyst: if there are no symptoms, then followup with repeat MRIs is appropriate.  Hope is for no change

: Small cysts less than 1 cm are incidental findings and may not be the cause of symptoms. MRI may be needed to confirm it’s a simple cyst. Follow up imaging is needed to confirm that they are not increasing in size.

: Small pineal cysts are typically benign congenital variants and cause no significant symptoms, BUT yours seems larger than most.  If it is not exerting a mass effect or causing profound problems, it would appear safe to fly.  However, discuss your current status with the neurologist or neurosurgeon who has been following you, just to be prudent.

Pineal Gland: Pineal gland secretes melatonin which causes excessive sleepiness. The cyst needs to be evaluated asap and treated.

"water on the brain": Terminology--a cyst is a "lesion" as is any abnormality. Your symptoms sound as if you're having episodic rapid increases of pressure in your head due to blockage of spinal fluid pathways or compression of upper brainstem directly. This is serious. Get this check out soon by a neurosurgeon.

Physical Therapy: Get a physical therapy program prescribed for you. Usually there are specific turning and massage techniques. One aid is shower to back of neck - hot - with turningt the head for four minutes/ day.
Does application of ice stop the headache?
It is important to know if you actually have migraine because the therapy is quite different.

Talk to your doctor: The fact you know this means you have had an imaging study. Discuss this with your doctor to see what you options are. You are having whole body symptoms so this is not something to ignore. You probably need a visit with a neurosurgeon as well.

They will be able to advise you much better than a short answer from a doctor who is unfamiliar with your child's case.

Usually benign: Pineal cysts are not uncommon, and the vast majority just sit there and cause NO problems.  Would check periodic MRI's to reassure, but it would be very unusual if the average cyst caused any mass effect to brain.
