hi, i had a sebaceous cyst  surgically removed 18 months ago. it left a red raised scar. it is now very painful, has the cyst come back? or is scar infected?

All are possibile: Yes it could be a raised scar tissue ( keloid ) or some times they can recur , or infected fluid  under the scar could be also strong possibility as it is 'now very painful' Best option see your doctor , if it is will drain it , possibly  Rx antibiotics , then you will be fine .

24-48 hours: It needs surgical intervention - meanwhile apply warm, wet compresses for 10 minutes 3-4 x a day. The antibiotic may take 24-48 hours to work. If it's not helping by then, it may not be covering the germ and would  need to be changed. (you need staph coverage; maybe even mrsa).

Multiple Options: You can go to a doctor and see the multiple options that are available. You can have it injected, an excision and drainage may also be available, a total excision, minimal excision, or laser. If it is bothering you, please go see a doctor and they can offer you some of these choices and see what works best for you :].

Wound infection: See your dr, it sounds like your wound is infected.  You will need antibiotics, and the stitches may need to be removed.

Pain: Put ice on area to help numb area before removing packing. Tylenol may help also. Consult with us to get an Rx for Lidocaine gel. If intolerable, see your MD for an injection of anesthesia.

In : In all likelihood, there is still pus inside the cyst.  A pinprick from a syringe is probably insufficient in removing anything except a small amount of thin fluid.  You really need an incision to get what's in there out of it.  In fact, if this thing keeps getting infected, you might want to see a surgeon and have the entire cyst removed.

The meat you've been putting on has served to keep the infection localized, but i hope you didn't go to a prime meat butcher for this, because a moist rag would have done the same for a lot less.

My best advice is to see your family physician who would more than likely be able to lance the thing and get much more stuff out, and you might even need a course of antibiotics.

Monitor: Probably just reaction to procedure, especially if you got sedation.  Watch for worsening signs like redness, swelling, fever.  Follow post procedure plans and contact your doc with any above symptoms.

Epidermoid cyst: Yes epidermoid cysts are benign. The best way to heal is to use warm compresses and wear lose clothing around them to minimize irritation. If gets infected antibiotics will help and in some cases may need to be drained.

i have started taking clindamycin about 48 hours ago for an infected cyst on my upper back, but i still haven't noticed any improvement... how long should i wait until i go to the hospital to have it drained?
