Accepted Answer

Varies: Recover time will vary depending on many factors including age, general health of the patient, infection control, blood sugar control, the exact type of procedure, and post-operative and follow up care.  Discuss it with your surgeon and get their opinion as to what they feel is a reasonable recovery time for you.

No but...: Generally this is not expected to cause pain and is benign. If it continues to be painful follow up with your physician because i know of one case where this was assumed to be a benign cyst and it turned out to be metasitized cancer. So have someone biopsy the cyst if it continues to be painful.

Ortho can tell u: Depending on size and location of cyst, the repair may be different and require mechanical variables

Benign or not: Cysts located within the bone may be a benign process by nature (not cancer) but still weaken the bone. They are often found during x-rays for other issues.  Some can be a bone cancer. I send my kids to the pediatric orthopedist that works with the oncology group at a children's hospital if the radiologist can't convince me it is benign.

i recently had curettage and bone graft surgery on my left femur. i now have a bone cyst. will this require further surgery?

No.:  As long as the cyst, is not causing any problems, such as pain, inability to walk, pinching a nerve etc, there is no need to do anything about it.

mri shows cyst in anterior cortex of distal femur and small joint effusion. could this be causing my constant pain and can cyst be drained/treated?

Accepted Answer

There are many: types of "cystic" bone lesions and most do not represent true fluid-filled cysts.  Some types of these lesions are completely innocuous and require no treatment, others can be more serious.  So it is difficult to render an opinion without evaluating the images or at least knowing the specific description in the MRI report.

had a cyst removed from my femur when 12 after a severe fracture and a titanium plate screwed into it. i am currently 33 and the left leg where the plate is located now causes me constant pain. is it even possible to remove the plate now?

: It is possible and if infected should be taken out Discuss with a Dr who knows you.

mri hemangioma lesion in metadiaphysis proximal femur, ganglion cyst arising from hip? is this rare?  had hip pain for 3 month do i need orthopaedics?

Fairly rare: Fairly rare spot for hemangioma but should be evaluated and followed by hip specialist as some intervention may be necessary if pain persists or hip function affected. Try to ring most experienced hip surgeon in your area.

i have a bakers cyst measuring 4.4 cm and "bone island" in the femur on right leg/knee. i also have a partial torn meniscus. is this serious?

Not life threatening: Not serious in the form of being life threatening.  The bone island is likely an incidental finding.  A bakers cyst in an adult is usually related to an underlying internal derangement of the knee, such as the meniscal tear you are describing.  If you are having trouble it is reasonably simple to take care of both arthroscopically.  Don't hesitate to be seen.

an mri in nov 2012 showed a radiological cyst on l. femur; pain since may 2012. i have stage 111c breast cancer. should i get a pet /ct?

Should see doc ASAP: I am sorry to hear of your breast cancer status. Mri picture is only a picture. Regardless of what it is, it is causing you pain and that should be evaluated and treated. Maybe it is a cyst, or maybe it is something else. You have reasons to get it looked at more thoroughly and so please don't hesitate to consult your doc.  Good luck to you.
