What type of cancer?: Regardless of age, cancer treatment varies quite a bit depending on the type & stage of the cancer.  Obviously, the treatment needs to be individualized based on risks vs. Benefits & one's ability to tolerate the stress of rx. Therefore, only the most minor interventions would be appropriate for most 97 yr olds.

Yes: Age is not a reason to forego possible curative therapy. Much will depend upon the nature and extent of the cancer itself.

No: he does not have to worry about cancer now, but after ten years of ulcerative colitis, the cancer risk start increasing significantly.
he needs to stay in touch with his GI even if his symptoms improved.

IT DEPENDS: If you are otherwise very healthy and expect to live another 10 or more years , you could say that the treatment should be the same as for a younger patient (except maybe avoiding adjuvent chemotherapy for node negative disease , esp if hormone sensitive).  If you are an infirmed 87 yo treatment should be more individualized so as not to harm you and lower your life expectancy.

Fair: Stage 1 larynx cancer limited to the cord is easiest to treat.  Stage iii where nodes are involved are not the main problem.  More difficult is when laryngeal cartilage is involved and may need partial laryngectomy.  Radiation and chemo with the new agents are very effective in handling nodal  metastasis to the neck. If not resectable.

Urinary Cancer: Sorry to hear about your Mom.  But not enough details many forms of urinary tract cancers. Discuss with her Drs.  They know her much better than we ever can.

May not be genetic: The type of ovarian cancer that runs in families is associated with specific genes (brac-1 and brac-2).  If you do not carry either of those genes your risk for ovarian cancer is likely no different from that in the general population.

what are the chances of my child getting a secondary cancer after her leukemia treatment is completed? daughter, age 9, treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, no radiation, 2.5 years of intrathecal and oral chemo meds.

A : A paper published by the national cancer institute in 2007 looked at secondary malignancy rates in over 16, 000 kids diagnosed and successfully treated for leukemia and lymphoma.  Overall, the rate of a second cancer in kids treated for leukemia (not specifying what kind of leukemia or treatment) within 30 years after diagnosis was 2.4%.  The chance of developing cancer in the general (adult and kid) population is 0.6%.  In this study, most secondary cancers occurred in kids that were treated for leukemia between the ages of 1 and 4 years of age.  The other thing to consider is that they were looking at patients treated in the late 1970's and 1980's and treatments may have changed since then.

The good news is that your daughter has a lot of things going for her such as her age, the type of leukemia she had (usually very treatable with less toxic medications than other cancers), and the fact that she did not have radiation.  So her risk might be even less than the other kids in that study.  If you have any specific questions about her care, please talk with her oncologist.  I hope she stays happy and healthy!  (odds are she will.)
