Talk to doctor: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. If the doctor who ordered the test is not able to interpret it, it would be useful to talk to the pathologist of the lab that did the tests.

my csf results show normal cell count but show inflammatory proteins-oligoclonal bands, what does this mean please?

Oligoclonal bands: These proteins are immunoglobulins usually detected by separating the proteins in an electric field-charged gel. Many CNS diseases are associated with their presence, but most commonly they are tested for when there is concern about multiple sclerosis. Since many diseases can cause the abnormality, finding them is not specific and must be correlated with symptoms and other findings.

Need more data: I would like to know your serum glucose at the time of the LP (csf glucose about 2/3 serum) and serum protein (csf 1/200 conc. Of serum).  If normal then picture is increased protein, hypoglycorrhachia, and no cells.  Without knowing the clinical presentation the diff includes- early bacterial meningitis, viral meningitis- herpes, sah, and tb. Please see your neurologist immediately and take care.

Talk to the lab: You or your doctor should contact the laboratory that reported the result and ask for an explanation. From what you described, there was sufficient sample.

if my lymphocytes are elevated and monocytes are decreased in my csf hematology results from a spinal tap should i be concerned? the tap was to rule out ms, what else could cause the increase and decrease in these levels?

Nonspecific: Increased lymphocytes in spinal fluid can be seen in many disorders including viral infections and MS. If MS is the primary concern, tthere are more specific tests and relatively precise imaging  studies that can be done

csf lab result. history of syphilis, hiv - my lab results are in but no neurosyphilis but, lymphs csf% value is %90, higher than normal mono, macro csf% is 8%, lower than normal. ive experiencing hairloss, headaches and diarrhea. what disease i hav?

: What was the total white blood cell count in your CSF? The cell type percentages mean nothing if the total is low and normal. Post a new question with the total WBC count, and also protein level.

? correlation: Taking this totally out of context, there is but one lab test reported.  If segs are elevated with high protein, elevated WBC's, and low glucose, would likely be sign of infection.  BUT if your percent is sole finding, it is not feasible to draw any diagnostic conclusions.  Also, not clear what clinical problem has occurred to prompt spinal tap.  Suggest resolution via a Concierge appointment.

Check with oncology: The cytology report is a bit concerning and you need to follow-up with your oncologist. Anytime you see increased lymphocytes in the absence of an infection, you have to watch for lymphoma.  Your oncologist should be able to give you more information depending on how increased the lymphocyte # is above the normal for your lab.

These values are OK: These levels do not look out of ordinary. You need to relate these levels to previous levels of these markers. if they were high before then this test might have some meaning. Your oncologist is your best guide to explain what it all means.

i had yellow fluid dripping from my left nostril 5-6 times in 3 years. i had it tested for 'csf sugar and protein levels' as recommended by an ent doctor. results: csf-sugar at 37.5 mg/dl and csf-protein at 9660 mg/dl. what could be the cause?

: These are abnormal findings and should be interpreted with other findings. Best that you have the ordering doc explain these to you
