my 2.5 yr old has croup a month ago. now fine but coughs a bit in morning and at night every day. not a croup cough. no other symptoms. see doctor?

Yes: The majority of croup cases are minor and will pass without treatment, yet some have more trouble ; require office or hospital care. The intensity of symptoms separate the two groups, so be observant and contac your physician for guidence. A calm nurturing approach and simple rocking will often settle a crouping child, who is frighteded by the noise their vibrating airway makes with each cough.

Needs to be seen: Although the fever broke, but she is still symptomatic, most probably it  is a viral URI, need to rule out middle ear or throat infection, or reactive airway disease causing her symptoms, good luck

Maybe/not: The viruses that cause croup cause vocal cord swelling/laryngitis in older kids &amp; adults. Croup is more a label for the pattern of the cough triggered in more worrisome cases, The virus can be the same but I would not call it croup unless &amp; until that harsh cough pattern emerged. It may do so in the next day or so.

22 months toddler had fever, croup and runny nose. fever stopped and symptoms got better but didn't go away for about 2 weeks. today the fever is back and cough and runny nose is as bad as it was in the beginning. what meds can we use?

Depends on the child: A gap of 2 weeks between symptoms suggests the two illnesses are different, not just one long one. Fever with symptoms of upper respiratory infection in a fully immunized 22 month infant are more suggestive of a viral infection. Fever can be controlled with paracetamol as needed, moist air and honey can be used to control cough. It's extremely important to hydrate. Avoid cough suppressant.

Supportive measures: The cause is usually a viral illness that inflames the upper airway.  Plenty of fluids, humidity and time should help.  If he isn't getting better or has breathing difficulties, see your doctor.

will nebulizing help for a dry croup cough?

Maybe: If you have  a nebulizer available it may help some. I often use only sterile saline (an unopened bottle of nose wash will do)  for such nebs to avoid the stimulating effects of albuterol. It helps wet the airway and help loosen secretions. If it is just saline you can do it as often as desired.

Characteristic cough: Croup is typically caused by a number of viruses and has a characteristic barky cough. The quality of the cough is similar to a seal barking.

Croup?: Croup is like barking make sure he is not asthmatic . How old is he?  Try opening the  hot shower for moist steem, push fluids . Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a cough suppressant  or ask your  dr  for his opinion.

Yes: Yes, the cough from croup is usually worse in the first few days. Then it gets better.
