menopausal; just turned 51 on 1/28. just joined gym on 29th. working elliptical machine + planks + crunches. light spotting +cramps on right side.why?

Overdoing it ?: If you just joined a gym and are doing all those exercises without gradually easing your way into an exercise regimen, you are overdoing it. You may have pulled a muscle, but if you are spotting you should definitely see your gyn if you are menopausal. Any bleeding after menopause is abnormal until proven otherwise.

Any: Any form of exercise that burns up calories will help you lose weight if combined with a calorie restricted diet. Avoid fat and junk food. See a registered dietitian for help. It takes 3500 calories to burn up one pound that you don't eat. Good luck. Your body will determine where it wants to burn up the fat. All you can do is tone up the muscles under the fat.

No: You can not spot train to loose belly fat, you have to loose it all over.  Cardio workout 4-5x/wk mixed with 1-2 days of strength training ( including crunches) is the best way to loose weight and tone up.

All: Both machines are designed to improve physical fitness but with less physical impact in knees and hips. You should use whatever you feel comfortable with.

Yes: Overall the elliptical machine is cardio machine that is low impact on the joints and back if done correctly.   Swimming and water aerobics are other forms of low impact exercise that should be ok with herniated discs.

Elliptical use is OK: Using an elliptical machine is not likely to place more pressure on lumbar discs than standing.  Disc pressure is thought to be highest when sitting and leaning forward.  Adding reason to minimize sitting for prolonged periods and using good posture.  In the absence of weakness, or  numbness in the lower extremities, be as active as possible and strengthen your abdominal musculature.

who knows what a "t.e.n.s" machine is & where to get one that is safe?

Safe: The tens is adjusted by a hand held controller which usually contains the batteries.  You may need a little trial and error.  Our office uses the national company emsi which has sales reps that will personally instruct the patient.

Limited: As a surgeon, i don't use tens units for TMJ treatment. Those with the greatest experience would be dentists who specialize in management of TMJ problems.
