how long does it take for this crackling in my lungs from bronchitis to go away. feeling totally fine except i sound like a cat purring constantly.

Can take weeks: I am sorry to hear about the bronchitis.  This excess phlegm is just the after effects of the inflammatory process and can take a couple (sometime 3-4 weeks) weeks to resolve.  You could try guaifenesin 300 mg by mouth and you can take this every 4 hours if needed.  This will help break up the mucus/phlegm.  Just make sure you are not pregnant while taking this.  Guaifenesin is also called Mucinex

i am a 50 year old male with no history of serious illness.  recently i have noticed a slight crackling sound in my lungs with normal inhale/exhale breathing.  should i be concerned or is this normal?

Most : Most definitely not normal. Could be due to nightime gastric reflux causing stomach acid to go into your lungs or something more serious. I would be especially concerned if you are a smoker. You need to see a doctor and be examined, probably have a chest xray done.

Bronchitis?: One explanation for crackling and wheezing sounds on exhalation is inflammation / infection of the breathing tubes (bronchi).  This is called bronchitis.  Pneumonia and partial occlusion of bronchi (by mucus or a foreign body) are other things that can cause expiratory crackling.  Some people with 'fluid in the lungs' or pulmonary edema may also have expiratory crackling sounds.

Needs to be checked: Crackling feeling in right chest may be due to bronchitis or pnumonia, or some thing in chest wall as you also have chest pain and you are using inhalers, probably for asthma
actually you do need a thorough examination to find out what is causing the crackling feeling, so get it checked by your doctor.

Several thoughts:: Breathlessness(shortness of breath) is a word people use that can describe 2 types of breathing. Rapid breathing suggests a pulmonary(lung) problem or heart problem. (Or a panic attack). Evaluation can include pulmonary function tests, chest X ray,EKG,Cardiac ultrasound.

Having difficulty "getting a full breath" with slow but very deep breaths suggests anxiety..Often feels like a weight on chest
