Several thoughts:: Breathlessness(shortness of breath) is a word people use that can describe 2 types of breathing. Rapid breathing suggests a pulmonary(lung) problem or heart problem. (Or a panic attack). Evaluation can include pulmonary function tests, chest X ray,EKG,Cardiac ultrasound. Having difficulty "getting a full breath" with slow but very deep breaths suggests anxiety..Often feels like a weight on chest
