TMJ: The most likely explanation is the temporomandibular joint (tmj). This joint is located just in front of the ear canal, and the sounds of the joint movements can often be detected by the nearby ear.  This is called crepitus, the crunchy, crackling noise of the joint . Inflammation of the TMJ usually produces more noticeable crepitus. Other causes are hairs or wax in the ear canal.

Normal: All of the joints in the body produce a small amount of gas bubbles. This is a common thing noticed as a cracking or popping in the joint. You hear it in you ear because the joint of the jaw is close to it and the sound conducts through the bone to the ear. So long as you have no pain there is nothing to worry about.

: You may have fluid in your middle ear. It is possible to have fluid in the middle ear if you have allergies and there is not adequate drainage as it should be, also infection could do that like viral infections e.t.c.

See an ENT doctor: Ear pain and fullness can be due to tmd (temporo-mandibular disorder).  Retraction of drum may indicate eustachian tube obstruction, but that requires a specialist's observation. Crackling on swallowing is normal.  The presence of normal hearing strongly indicates no pathology in the external or middle ear.

i'm on claritin & omnaris for almost 10 days for my right ear crackling with touch & movement. as of saturday & sunday i had few hours my ear felt normal. today it's crackling all day if i touch it. what is causing this? is ear tube surgery needed?

: Typically you are on those medications for allergies and the congestion associated with the allergies. With allergies, there is swelling of the tissues of the connections between the ears and the mouth call the eustachian tubes. And the crackling is the air moving through those tubes as the pressure changes in them. You are just hearing that.
