Yes, not quite: Yes, it may help shrink swollen tissues such as tendons and thus reduce pressure on the median nerve which runs thought the carpal tunnel. This would stop the tingling numbness. The most reliable test for carpal tunnel syndrome is a nerve conduction study.

Temporary benefit: Typically, there is a localized inflammation at the tunnel causing the nerve compression. The shot is anti-inflammatory and may reduce swelling and reverse the problem.  Often of limited benefit, but helps in about 30-40% and decreases pain, numbness, weakness.

A : A cortisone injection accompanied by the use of a splint is one way to treat carpal tunnel syndrome by reducing swelling around the nerve in the carpal canal, reducing pressure on the nerve and hopefully reducing symptoms.  However there are times when the injection is not enough and surgery is needed.  Many surgeons will try cortisone shots in an attempt to help with out surgery.  A cortisone objection typically works in a few days but  can take as long as two weeks. 
The next step may be nerve conduction studies and emgs and consideration of surgery.

They tend to be most helpful in individuals with mild disease that has been present for a shorter period of time (< 1 year).  More advanced or severe cts is not likely to have a lasting response from a steroid injection.
