Very rare: Syringomyelia from an epidural injection has been reported but typically you would have signs of spinal cord injury directly after the injection (eg., numbness, weakness, or bowel/bladder problems). In my experience I have never seen such a case but it has been reported in the medical literature on a very rare basis.

Very rarely: The medication used is some type of steroid.  A single dose is unlikely to cause weight gain, though frequent and repeated doses may in some cases.

CES: A procedure where a needle is placed between the bones of the spine entering carefully  the epidural space. Usually it is quite straight forward if done by a seasoned MD - do not have this done under any sedation - you will get ample local. Side effects usually not seen but may include increased pain for a few days, facial flushing - these will improve. Know the risks before you have it.

Needs an exam: It is not uncommon for some patient's who have an epidural injection to have some increased pain the first day of the injection due to the added volume of the injected fluid around an already tight space. However complications of the injection can present initially as increased pain and loss of motion as well. Please call the doctor who did the injections and be seen, so you can be evaluated.

You are on the path: Epidural injections are the next step when time, physical therapy, and oral medications have failed. It can take several days for the injections to start making a difference and sometimes takes several injections to achieve significant pain relief. If the injections fail talk to a spine specialist about other options.

Pain after epidural : This depends on location of epidural. If in lower back it is not a likely source. If it was a cervical (neck) epidural it may be the problem. The medications used in an epidural for back pain can temporarily irritate the affected nerves. This usually resolves. The other source of pain can be trauma to a nerve during the injection. This will also usually resolve but ask the doctor that did it.
