currently have bronchitis. occasionally will cough up pink foam first thing in the morning & nothing the rest of the day. should i be concerned or since it's infrequent not worry about it?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Any semblance of pink red or brown should at least be evaluated by a physician. It may be nothing or something such as post nasal but the pink implies potential for blood and at the very least you do need seen.

is it normal to cough up bright pink blood during a sever cold?

Accepted Answer

Can occur: Hemoptysis can occur from nasal bleeding and pulmonary conditions like pneumonia and bronchitis. Still cause for concern. If you smoke stop and see your physician your age makes the more serious conditions less likely but not absolutely protective.

Couple of days: Sounds just inflamed. Would just treat it conservatively. Sitz baths, stool softeners and over the counter anesthetic creams. In rare cases it may be a thrombosed (clotted) hemorrhoid. If so, these will last longer and can be incredibly painful and my require evacuation of the clot

can sputum color change color after you cough it up? ie: go from pink to orange?

Accepted Answer

May be: If sputum contains fresh blood and inflammatory exudate, the enzymes in the exudate may breakdown red cell and hemoglobin with a resulting change in color.  Sputum would probably need to sit at room temperature for a number of hour to see the change.  If sputum is collected for lab tests, it should be delivered to the lab asap.

every morning i cough up white frothy foam.  i am asthmatic, dors this have anything to do with my asthma?  i have not used my albuteral for awhile.

Possibly: If this has been going on for a while, see your doctor for an evaluation.  It could be asthma related, but also may be due to allergies, infection leading to bronchitis or other lung issues.

Allergies or a virus: This could just viral upper respiratory infection. If she looks happy do not worry but she looks sick or difficult time in breathing she needs to be seen..you may want to use a cool mist vaporizer..If she looks ill and continues to cough take her in

Not Uncommon: You may actually have had pertussis or a viral upper respiratory infection that not uncommonly can cause residual coughing for months following the acute event. On the other hand you may also have allergic asthma requiring separate current treatment.

is pinky red mucus in stool caused by pink cough syrup?

Red color may be: related to dyes in cough syrup. Mucus is a lubricant in our GI tract – so a small amounts needn't be a concern. However if there are large amounts of mucus especially if associated with blood  or abdominal pain– that warrants evaluation.

Cough: You cough is due to a post nasal drip from a possible sinus infection. Use a vaporizer at night and sleep on several pillows. If the symptoms have been present for longer than ten days consult an ENT specialist for possible antibiotic therapy.
