my son is 4yrs old and i have noticed in his stool look like asif there is string like nylon/cotton in his stool.its been so for a while,not everyday or everytime he goes to toilet but it's  more often than not. what is the reason for this?

Need to see a: healthcare provider ASAP.  As you are HIV+, even if well controlled, you may end up getting parasitic infections that could show up as mucus.  Or you could have opportunistic fungal infections or malabsorption problems.  Or the mucus could be from what you ate the day before.  You still need to see a healthcare provider and perhaps stool sample for proper exam and treatment.

Mucus: These are most likely mucus strands and your symptoms are consistent with irritable bowel syndrome in view of alternating loose and somewhat constipated stools.  If you have further concerns, consult a gastroenterologist for evaluation,advice and treatment. In the meantime include adequate fluids and fiber in your diet and this could include daily metamucil.

?IBD: There's no situation where mucus around your stool is normal. I'm concerned you may have an inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. See your doctor. In the meantime, eat right, stay hydrated, and get your rest. Good luck.

Have to see it: Hi! Small amount of mucus in stool can be normal.  Rectal/anal candidiasis would give you other symptoms. If this issue persists, it would be most helpful if you see a doctor and bring a sample of stool with you (in a small clean jar, can keep tightly closed in fridge for 3-5 days).

Stool color: This is generally caused by something you ate that contained a non-digestible pigment, or by the particular types of bacteria in your colon. It is of no concern. On rare occasions this may be bile, but again not a problem.

Oxygen restriction: In making cotton masks, the goal is to have enough layers to filter out medium to large particles. Thinsulate is a very restrictive fabric allowing minimal gas exchange in the form of water vapor. It may restrict how much oxygen you can get while breathing and cause you to feel dizzy.  Two layers of a medium weave fabric should provide enough filtration for common use.

Several possibilitie: Stool can be dark from iron pills pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) or foods like spinach. Black tarry stools may indicate bleeding from the stomach area and should be checked right away.
