i'm a black woman and have had a very itchy labia for months. my labia is now light from scratching. i've used yeast creams, cortisone, & steroid cream. what is the cause? will i get my color back?

? cause: Anything that causes inflammation of skin can cause permanent pigment changes.  Light people can get dark marks; darker skin can get either more or less pigmented areas.  It is hard to say what is causing your itch.  Your best bet for normalizing the color of the affected skin is to control the itching with oral medication to stop your scratching.

can you use hydrocortisone or monistat outside of vagina and labia before pap for yeast infection and itching?

Topicals are ok: Using these creams outside the vagina should not affect your pap.

early yeast infection, given diflucan and told to use hydrocortisone for slight itch. i only have triamcinolone. can i use that on vulva?

Accepted Answer

Corticosteroid cream: Triamcinolone cream is fine at the usual concentration of 0.1% (check the label). It's more potent than hydrocortisone and probably will be more effective in controlling the itch. But potent corticosteroids like triamcinolone should not be used for prolonged periods on delicate tissues like the vulva. And never use alone for yeast. Without anti-yeast treatment; it could make the infection worse.

See gynecologist: Likely not yeast. You should see a gynecologist as soon as possible. It could just be an infected hair follicle but it could also be an std. It is always best to get it diagnosed by gyn so you can get the best treatment.

Labia: It could be genital herpes, especially if both sides.  Your labia have skin on them just like any other part of your body.  There are skin conditions that can occur there as well.  Your GYN might need to take a biopsy of the area of concern to confirm

No worries: Having a yeast infection can offer cause tenderness.   If you treated the yeast infection with medication then it is possible that the yeast infection has not completely cleared up.  Another possibility after treating a yeast infection is development of bacterial vaginosis.  If you develop itching and/or an odor then you should be checked.  Just wait a few days and see if the stinging resolved.

Wrong treatments: Yeast is a type of infection that results when there is an imbalance of the many things that live in and on our bodies...Usually caused by antibiotics.  Cortisone is a steroid used to decrease inflammation when it is not helping but rather causes problems.  Like antibacterials for bacteria, a treatment specific for treating yeast should be used.  Depending on where it is, the treatment varies.

Yes: The agent of a yeast infection requires only a moist area & a bit of skin irritation to begin growing. Yeast cells are in your poo, & the close proximity to the labia make it easy for a small amount to set up an infection. Wiping front to back after a dump & keeping the area dry & clean can decrease the chances it will take hold.

Creams: Over- the- counter medicines for yeast infections include: micon 7, monistat, vagistat, (tioconazole) gynazole, femcare, gyne-lotrimin; mycelex.
