: I would look at how long all of his relatives lived and what they died of. Stop smoking is first thing.  The lower his LDL the longer he will live. This can be lowered by Ornish Diet and/or meds. Your can go to several risk calculators online and enter his data which will predict risk of another heart issue over next 10 years.  Ideally get BMI down to less than 25.Keep BP less than 120 systolic.

Should be the same: Both Cartia XT &amp; Cardizem are diltiazem, a calcium channel blocker. These drugs relax your heart muscle &amp; coronary arteries. Cartia XT is a longer acting/sustained release preparation. Often this is prescribed in order to simplify your drug taking regimen, having to take Cartia XT only once a day. But ? more expensive. It probably is a choice between convenience &amp; cost:)

Time to get a doc : There was massive progress in the last few decades on prevention and early treatment of cardiac disease. Calculating a modified Framingham score that includes family history would be a good starting point. You will need cholesterol levels as well as blood pressure among others and having all started under the direction of a physician would be the way to go.

Yes: "drugs" is a vague term but if you mean recreational drugs then yes. Marijuana is as bad if not worse than cigarettes. No filter, held for extended time in lungs, and often contains unknown contaminants.So if smoking is a known risk factor....Cocaine tends to cause intense coronary artery vasospasm.This can damage the endothelium and allow cholesterol to deposit in the vessels.

i have had 3 echos and 1 mri over course of a few years.... recently got ct scan and was just diagnosed with coronary artery anomoly. how is this even possible? it didn't show up until the ct scan. is diagnosis wrong?

Different approach: In general, the CT is more accurate than an echo in detecting anatomical anomaly.

any drugs out there to break up plaque in coronary arteries rather than all invasive stuff? clot buster drugs but nothing for plaque?

No: Wouldn't it be something if there was a drug to dissolve plaque? A lot of people would be out of business. Despite the lay press, there are no proven therapies that dissolve plaque with any consistency that cannot be due to chance.
