Depends: Sometimes patients are given emperic therapy based on complaint. Clostridium difficile can cause a GI illness presenting as diarrhea following antibiotic use. It can be easily treated with Flagyl but if not treated may lead to severe illness, protracted hospitalization and even death. If you have concerns speak with your doctor. There is a stool test available.

Monitor: Once you have C. diff there is a reasonable chance you can be colonized. The criteria for infection include watery stools in excess of 3-4 times daily. The pain or discomfort is usually in the lower abdomen.  Soft stools with a relatively low daily frequency usually are not indicative of C. diff. In summary, the presence of C. diff. in your stool in itself is not indicative of infection

my 19 months old son has mucus in his stools.  in december 2013 he was diagnosed mith colitis and clostridium difficile there is no blood seen.

Your question?: I don't know what your question is, but you need to take your son to your pediatrician promptly for further evaluation.  C. diff has a nasty way of recurring and just because "no blood is seen" doesn't mean there's no blood in his stool.  I certainly hope the mucus isn't a sign of something serious, but you need to find out for certain.  Best wishes.

No: These are two different tests. A separate test would have to be ordered to check for clostridium difficile.

C.diff treatment: Interesting you know about how effective stool donations can be for helping C. diff patients.  It works very well.  C. diff is a horrible and devastating disease, killing up to 15% of victims according to the CDC. You may want to freeze your own stool if you're worried about it or concerned for a relative.  Obviously keeping that separate from food is a must. There are no labs doing this yet.

can i still have gallbladder surgery if i just tested positive for cdiff?

I would wait: In general, elective surgery should be avoided when your body is battling any infection. Your risk of complications will go up. Metronidazole which is commonly used for c. Diff does have good effect on the gallbladder also, but unless you are having a serious gallbladder complication like cholangitis, waiting until your body is ready to tackle a surgery would be prudent.

C.diff: C. Diff is a definite cause of diarrhea, especially if recent antibiotics.  I doubt if this is the cause of the chronic course.  There are other causes taht need to be looked into, especially if your child is not gaining, or is losing, weight.

Yes: Higher dose of oral vanco 500 mg 4 times per day for 2 weeks then taper slowly over 6 weeks..other option is fodaximycin ( expensive new drug) thee option if those failed and u get another recurrence then stool transplant .. Simple advise to avoid recurrence ; don't take antibiotics for cold or Ito that is not even symptomatic .. I mean take the antibiotics only if really needed

Usually not: Re-tested as a matter of routine. If you are not better after the prescribed course of treatment then see your doctor or gastroenterologist asap for a re-evaluation of your condition. Don't wait to get more ill or dehydrated.
