Neti pots can : Reduce nasal congestion. Mix ¼ tsp salt w 1 cup lukewarm water. More salt can also be used. Place solution in neti pot. Tilt head ; pour solution into 1 nostril. Blow nose lightly ; spit out any liquid that drains into throat. Repeat on other side. This can be done in the evening before you go to bed ; again in A.M. You can watch a video online to get the finer details down.   Afrin is hard core.

Congested nose: rarely. Humans are obligate nose breather. Breathe through mouth if only option. Nasal congestion and adenoid hypertrophy can lead to sleep apnea, chronic ear disease, sinus infections, behavior problems, daytime drowsiness, inattention, etc, etc. Best to see ENT for evaluation and possible treatment

No URTI: probably has a Cold OR viral infection suctioned and clean the secretions with saline solution an ear bulb frequently and aggressively until airway in clean. May last couple of days if longer became lethargic does not eat or pee as usual immediately to the doctor or ED. Good Luck,!!

Table salt: Boil some water, take 7 ounces of that water and add 1/4 teaspoon of table salt and let it cool off. There is your home made remedy. The only thing is , you have to make fresh ones every 2-3 days. You have to account for cost of water, gas or electric bill. Is it worth it? I would recommend buying saline solutions otc which is cheaper, more practical and you can keep till its expiration date!

Symptomatic Rx: Sounds like a cold. No cure for that but it is about rest, fluids, and time and of course  managing the symptoms.  Consider decongestants and antihistamines.  Cough syrups and drops may be of benefit.  If you are a smoker now would be a good time to stop.
