It is VERY unusual: for a 28 yr old to have multiple compression fractures w/out trauma. There has to be an underlying medical cause, &amp; likely not just osteoporosis (see your PCP). Make sure you don't just have Scheuermann's kyphosis, which a radiologist might mention on a report as compression fractures, when it is actually the normal shape of the vertebra. Typically there is about 3 to 5 consecutive wedged vertebra

Fractures: Normal bone density with four vertebral fractures does not make sense. The bone is my specialty. Hopefully you have had the proper tests done and treatment started. If not you must do so immediately. There some women, about 15 over the last few years while pregnant or 6 months after birth who also have unexpected fractures. See an endocrinologist and orthopedist.

Osteoporosis: The usual cause of compression fractures in the spine is osteoporosis -- low bone mass that usually occurs after menopause in women but it can occur in men after testosterone levels have dropped or for anyone on certain medications that interfer with bone metabolism.  Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin d along with exercise can slow progression but one should check with their physician.

Why do you have : Compression fractures at 31 unless from trauma and then they will heal within 12 weeks.  Is there an underlying metabolic issue in terms of bone density that may have to be investigated otherwise if not due to trauma.  You may then need to see an endocrinologist for further workup if that is the case.

See your doctor: All those symptoms appear unrelated. It is very unusual for someone of your age to have spinal compression fractures without significant trauma. So if you really do have compression fractures, you need to find out what is causing those fractures? You will need to undergo a physical exam, and various diagnostic work-up, to understand what's is causing these issues.

Need more info: Hi. What degree of trauma caused 4 vert. compression fractures? If it was heavy trauma, maybe nothing's abnormal. If it was minimal trauma, that is very abnormal. It would help to know your bone densitometry T-scores and blood tests to look at calcium, kidney function, PTH, bone turnover markers, and any other tests prompted by a thorough medical evaluation by a metabolic bone specialist.

Pain med, rest: The routine treatment would be to limit
activities especially heavy lifting or sports
typically the fracture will heal over 6-8 weeks
but most of the severe pain is alleviated in the
first 2-3 weeks.

due to traumatic fall 2008 severe pain from thoracic compression fractures/soft tissue damage. spine doc said too young for kyphoplasty, other options? tried chiro, natural, everything. on morphine sr.

Chronic back pain: I am sorry you are going through this, chronic back pain is very difficult to treat. Your spine doc is correct. Other options to try, physical therapy, vitamin d3 level and replacement, ask for referral to back pain specialist. You might benefit from injection. Good luck.
