It doesn't. : The idea of colon cleansing is based on a misunderstanding of anatomy & physiology. Your colon is actually outside of you. You actually surround a space through which foods pass & excrement is produced. The body takes care of its own cleansing if you have a proper diet & fluid intake. Colonic treatment is outlawed in certain states because in the wrong hands has led to bowel perforation & death.

Yes and No: It can help release toxins, but please realize that your body naturally wants to get toxins out.  When you have enough fiber in your diet, the toxins will bind and be eliminated.  Make sure your liver has what it needs to detox appropriately.  I do not believe colon cleanses are necessary.  You can get bloating, cramping..   Don't force a detox.  Support the body and it will detox on its own!

Saline enemas: I know of no evidence that saline enemas are either cleansing or healthy. I recommend you go to UpToDate and look it up.

Probably not: I personally believe it is not woth the money and doubt it's long-term usefulness.

Help what?: If you referring to cleansing your colon..It can clean out your stool, but as you eat stool will re-accumulate. Is there a health benefit? I am not aware of anything signifincant, at least not in the long run.
As a matter of fact, excessive use/missue of such can destroy normal colonic bacteria and predispose to other problems/infections. Not recommended.

Not a fan: I am not a fan of these techniques.  Your colon is made to handle a high bacterial load and eliminate wastes.  Proper nutrition and a high fiber diet with good hydration help it to work better in doing this.  Aggressive cleanses can upset electrolyte balance and lead to colon irritation as well as upset normal bacterial flora (and lead to things like c-difficile colitis).

Colonic enemas: Legitimate uses for colonic enemas or cleanses is for severe constipation, neurogenic bowel dysfuction or as part of a bowel prep. Prior to surgery involving bowel. Colonic cleanse can be performed by a cleanout from above prior to colonoscopy or bowel surgery. Colonic cleanses, for otherwise healthy individuals, is hocus pocus with no proof of efficacy. Thus best avoided if not indicated.

Unless prescribed...: I'M ALL FOR IT IF by "cleanse" you mean adopting a healthy lifestyle with routine exercise, cutting out tobacco, reducing alcohol &amp;sugary drinks, minimizing highly processed foods &amp;fats, &amp;adding in lean proteins, whole fruits, vegetables, &amp; nuts. DON'T CLEANSE IF instead you mean taking some fad diet, enema, colonic, or purgative to lose weight or supposedly rid your body of unspecified "toxins."
