Should not: The scope is inserted into your rectum in a colonoscopy and should not in any way cause a uti.  If you were catheterized for any reason during the procedure, than that could be risk factor for getting a uti.

i have a colonoscopy in 3 days and developed a uti. should i get treated beforehand or wait till after the procedure?

Urinary tract infect: So you know you have a urinary tract infection? Do you really want to put up w/painful frequent urgent urination for another 3 days? Whoever made your diagnosis should start you on appropriate antibiotics. Let your Gastroenterologist know as s/he may want to delay your colonoscopy.

Possibly: The prep for colonoscopy which give you diarrhea may result in some dehydration which can leave you prone to developing a uti.

can i develop pyelonephritis & chronic uti from postpolypectomy/peritonitis post-colonoscopy?

Accepted Answer

Complicated: If the intra-abdominal infection involved the kidney in some fashion then pyelonephritis could conceivably occur, but this should be treatable.  With this process the presence of a Foley catheter during your management can predispose to uti, as can bacteremias which occur during the infectious process.  None of these would necessarily create chronic uti, but anything is possible.

Not with polyps: Bladder irritation and colonic fistula ( connection to bladder and colon ) usually not due to polyps  but  due to diverticulitis which is a benign disease . Don't worry wait until tests are complete ..

bad gas/urination/anemia for over 2 years. endoscopy/colonoscopy clean. was told stress. now i have a late period. could it be a uti or bad thyroid?

Seemingly unrelated: I'm not sure what the urination problem is, but "bad gas" is usually dietary related and anemia in a young woman such as yourself is often due to excessive menstrual bleeding. Stress may contribute to digestive issues and a late period. If you are having painful or frequent urination, then be checked for a UTI.You should be taking iron supplements; with late period check for pregnancy. Good wishes

22 year old female- abdominal in lower, front, right, hip area. spontaneous sharp pain and it hurt with pressure. had a colonoscopy and didn't find anything. feels better with knees to chest. don't think it's appendicitis, kidney stones, or uti?

: Occasionally, if you are not on oral bcp's,  a cyst may form in your ovary, and if enlarging, can cause pain. Your GYN physician may order an ultrasound of the pelvis if the pain persists.  Pelvic infections are sometimes not symmetrical and can also cause pain.

UTI probably: Extensive work up is reassuring.  Yes chronic cystitis and urinary tract infection could cause low to mid back pain especially if there is an extension causing kidney infection. Continue to follow with your doctor as urinalysis and urine culture and appropriate antibiotics may correct the problem.

what is a colonoscopy?

Look inside colon: You are sedated (very sleepy, but still breathing on your own).  The endoscopist places an instrument through your anus and then passes it into the colon to carefully exam the colon for polyps, cancer, etc.  If any abnormalities are found a biopsy may be done. Typically, it is painless - the only bother is cleaning out your bowels beforehand and even that's not so bad.

No: Colonoscopy is usually performed with some form of sedation and if done correctly you should not feel anything or remember anything.
