Accepted Answer

Discomfort: Certainly a colon filled with hard stool can be uncomfortable, but not damaging.  Constipation prevention tips include lots of water, fiber in diet (whole grains, fruits and veggies); possibly a psyllium supplement; and DAILY exercise.  Good wishes!

See GI: If you were not adequately prepared for the test then it is possible that something was missed.  The radiologist will usually comment on whether or not he/she felt the prep was adequate.  If the radiologist felt that the study was not adequate because of the prep then see a GI doctor and discuss a colonoscopy.

Accepted Answer

Relatively common: Stool retention is relatively common. Successful treatment requires a plan of scheduled emptying, long term use of stool softeners or wetting agents (like miralax), & work by the kid & parents for as much as a year or two. A skilled pediatrician or pedi GI doc can help. Good luck.

if it feels like my colon is full still after i use the washroom, can that mean be normal? i heard of colon cancer, but stool seems normal. no pain.

May be normal: The reservoir of the large bowel is transverse colon and not rectum.  One may not be fully emptying that site if having normal BM.  The final solution is in colonoscopy where if nothing seen on complete scoping, this would rule out Ca.  If such occurs the symptoms may be arising in small bowel and at that point TCT of abdomen would be helpful

hi doctor i've been having blood in my stool i did a full colon scan last year the doctor says it will ensure me from cancer for 5 years is it true ?

Yes: A successful colonoscopy would ensure your being colon cancer free for five years. 
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex.

is it possible to have bleeding in your colon without blood in stool? my hgb is below 7.1, my bowels are slushy and full of mucus but no blood in stool or towel. could this still mean i am losing blood from the colon?

: Yes, while sometimes the bleeding is macroscopic or visible, many other times the bleeding is microscopic and the stool can be easily checked for blood traces through different methods, some available commercially, under fecal occult blood test. Best would be to keep your main docs involved, primary care doc and gastroenterologist, so that decisions are made in proper context.

Yeast always present: Yeast is present and every individual in the colon. At your age there are certain types of bacteria present in the vaginal region with the ph of the vaginal mucosa being approximately five. That low ph prevents overgrowth of more common bacteria that can infect the urinary track.  Common antibiotics may eliminate that normal vaginal bacteria and lead to overgrowth of yeast in the vaginal region.

Loose stool: At your age colon cancer would be very rare.  Abd US and full blood count are not the best tests to screen for colon cancer.  A colonoscopy would be the better test.  If your tests thus far are normal but still have symptoms, I would see your doctor for further testing.  Colonoscopy would be the best test as I stated before if all other tests were normal.

Motility: The colon is the last part of the tube we call the GI tract. The colon's primary job is absorption of water and storage of solid waste until defecation. There are circular & longitudinal muscles that contract sequentially to both mix food so it contacts the colon lining effectively (& thus promotes absorption) as well as propels food forward toward the rectum. Various stimuli control the process.

Enema: Often an over the counter enema can soften the stool and allow it to pass. If this is not successul then it will be necessary to see your doctor. Sometimes the hard stool needs to be manually removed by a health professional.
