Exam needed: Proceed to the hospital emergency room for an examination and whether an xray is indicated. If there is a fracture of the clavicle, a special sling will be given to  you along with instructions and follow-up.

i had a collarbone injury a few years ago, but the injury was not treated correctly at the time. now i experience numbness and tingling in my arm. i also get neck pain and headaches on a daily basis.

Arm symptoms: I would be suspicious of a nerve root impingement caused by a bulging intervertebral disc in your neck. An MRI of your neck would be most helpful in ruling this in or out. I don't think that the collarbone injury is related. A neurologist or neurosurgeon could evaluate and advise you and order the MRI if deemed advisable.

yesterday i woke up with a i quarter sized indent in my chest between my ribs. last night you not only could you see the indent you can see every bone from my hips to collarbone. today im hurting from my hips to collarbone. no injurys whats going on?

Depends on details: A college-aged woman with a slim build should be able to see some outline of all her bones from the hips up to the collarbone. If she is not slim and normally cannot see outlines of her bones, there is no way for her to suddenly lose so much body fat overnight such that she can see all her bones by morning. If that happened, it may mean a change in visual perception, and not a change in body fat.

how are broken collarbone/fractured clavicle injuries treated?

Majority are treated: In a sling + pain meds, but some are treated surgically if the bone fragments are widely separated, or if its an open fx (skin is broken over the fx site), or if there is an associated injury to a nerve or a vessel.

i have sharp/achy pain near my collarbone/shoulder. no injury/right side/worsening day by day. advil (ibuprofen) doesn't work. doesn't feel like injury. help ?

Be checked: There are many potential causes and you should consider being checked.  Probably the two most common are a rotator cuff tear or a pinched nerve in the neck.  If it hurts to raise you arm over your head, rotator is more likely.  If it does not make it worse, or even helps to raise arm over head, pinched nerve is more likely.  Again, consider being checked.  Thank you for the question.

Dislocation?: Where is it popped out?  One of the most common injuries to the shoulde is a disclocation of the joint where the collar bone joins the shoulder. It's called the acromioclavicular joint. If you fall  onto the side of your shoulder, this joint can be dislocated. If it happened a long time ago. There may be arthritis now in that joint. If painful get it evaluated.

i have a hard lump on my right collarbone from last 6 months now and had no injuries at all. i had an mri scan but the results were normal. it is pain?

Lump: I would suggest you see your doctor or a surgeon. You had an MRI i would think it would show a lump if it was your bone. However it soft tissue problem it might not have defined the lesion. Obviously you know you have a lump.

hard non-moving lump on collarbone. no other symptoms, no injuries..noticed about 4 days ago. feels like it may have gotten bigger. appt set for end of march. what could this be? 25 otherwise healthy?

my son, 36,says the front part of his collarbone on left side feels bruised, it is sore to touch & hurts when he moves his arm in certain ways, there is no swelling,he has not had any injury but he used to lift weights, what is this? is this serious?

: Just avoid the arm position which exacerbates that pain for a couple days, apply cold or warm pack to the pain area +/- ibuprofen OTC as needed in the meantime. It depends on the exact pain location, problem could be from sternoclavicular vs. acromioclavicular joint, not the clavicle by itself if there is no history of injury/trauma. If symptoms get worse, he should be examined by an orthopedist.

should children with collar bone injuries swim?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Collar bone injuries heal pretty quickly in children.  Swimming is not contraindicated as long as they can do so without a great deal of pain.
