Two different things: Cankers (recurrent aphthous ulcers) are an "auto-immune" type reaction to trauma/stress (such as biting your lip). They occur on the loose membranes of your lips, cheeks and floor of the mouth.  Your dentist can treat with prednisone, laser or chemicals to cut pain. Cold sores are hsv. Abreva helps those some, but most need doc rx. Both go away without treatment in 10-14 days (pain only 3-5 days).

on june 22 i was deep kissed by a date. i washed my lips and mouth immediately after. i later found out he gets cold sores. i have no symptoms. i tested at 5 weeks(july 25) igg neg. type 1 and 2. is my result accurate? should i retest?

: Low risk. Testing really wasn't necessary, but the result shows you weren't infected. And it wouldn't worry very much if you were. Don't worry about it.

i was exposed to herpes a few days ago. i just touched my mouth and then touched my eye. but i dont have cold sores yet . can i transmit herpes to my eye this way even when no symptoms have arose?

It's possible: HSV may take a while to incubate and present on your body after exposure. Suggest you carefully monitor for any skin rash or eve problems. If it makes you feel more comfortable, would see your dermatologist for eval { and poss testing a bit later on}

i have had cold sores for years. sometimes i don't have symptoms prior or i at least don't notice. the bump just appears. i kissed my kids cheek/head & husband but on his mouth hours before this cold sore appeared today. will they get cold sore now?

: Unlikely the kids will it as they were kissed on the head/ cheek. Since you intermittently get cold sore avoid kissing children on the eyes or mouth or any mucus membrane(as can shed w/o symptoms). There may be some risk to your husband. How often do you get cold sores? If several times a year  discuss with your physician suppressive therapy with  Valacyclovir or even consider Lysine 500  mg /day

Probably yes: The HSV IgG tests are excellent, and a negative result for HSV2 6+ months after exposure shows you were not infected. The HSV1 result should have been positive if your diagnosis of past cold sores is correct, but once in a while the test misses HSV1 (but rarely HSV2). The IgM result doesn't help one way or the other -- it's inherently unreliable anyway, never done by herpes or STD experts.

Viral illness.: Most cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus.  Especially the first time you get the infection there will be other symptoms besides the sores like aching, sometimes headache or fever and or swollen glands.

There is no cure, it usually lays dormant in the nerve endings and erupts in an incident after stress, trauma or external stimulants. They usually last 7-10 days and there are meds that can lessen the duration and intensity. Herpes is another possibility. See a dentist to have evaluated.
