hi, no matter what i do every winter i get a cold in my back that lasts for weeks and makes me feel terrible, it usually ends up in a cold or virus.?

Not uncommon: Many of us get a viral or mycoplasmal infection about once a year.  Depends upon whether you are frequently in close contact and thereby exposed to large numbers of persons with such infections, resulting in your getting them..  Your doctor is often exposed by seeing lots of patients with these illnesses.

: Do you experience a cold.or hot sensation even though your skin temperature is not hot or cold when you touch it?  I have seen patients whose sensations at times were cold &amp;hot at other times  These were cases of peripheral neuropathy involving the feet,however. Your situation may be caused by neuropathy involving more superficial nerves. I recommend checking for vitamin B12 deficiency &amp; diabetes.

R/O ESOPHAGEAL SPASM: Gerd can predispose to esophageal spasm which tends to flare with extremes of temperature of your food. Ie very cold or hot food. See neurologist: Feeling of cold, heat or numbness in any part of the body is indicative of nerve damage . Please see your pcp or a neurologist for thorough examination and some blood tests.

Both!: Initially cold to calm down the inflammation from the initial injury and then heat helps the muscle itself to relax. Ice is usually maximum benefit for the first 72 hours only.
Try to eliminate the cause of the back spasm and avoid it in future. Avoid prolonged sitting, including working on a computer and driving. Avoid heavy lifting. Muscle relaxants and a chiropractor may be helpful.
