That is safe: Constipation can be an issue during pregnancy. So the docusate is important to reduce the amount of strain or vasalva pressure you put on your entire system when you're constipated and trying to have a BM. So you are safe to keep constipation at bay by taking a stool softener (docusate).

hi doctors. i have not had a bowel movement since monday morning, although 3 days is not unusual for me. i have colace and miralax at home. should i take either of these, or something else, and how do i know when i should discontinue the medication?

: Colace won't be effective when you haven't had a BM for 3 days. You should take a scoop of miralax now and if you do not have a good bowel movement in 8 hours, you can take another dose. Colace is a stool softener so you should take it twice a day along with adequate fluid intake every day. Miralax is a relative benign laxative so you can take 2 or 3 times a week as needed, e.g. no BM for 2 days.

Not without MD: One should not take a Potassium supplement unless Potassium deficient and not without monitoring.  Clear all medications and supplements with your obgyn. Fiber and water are a more natural treatment option for constipation if you are looking to avoid medications.

Drs advice: The amount of any given medication is titrated by the prescribing physician according to the patient's individual needs. Please call your physician and ask your question of him/her. Your physician can tell you why he/she feels that this is an appropriate dose to treat your problem.

Usually 1-2 tabs/d: For a week. If you have not responded in that time you should go see your doc. Also, you should also examine your diet and eliminate foods known to cause constipation - rice, grains, barley, milk- and split peas.

Accepted Answer

Not the best.: Instead of using Colace (docusate sodium) a long term, a better approach would be to increase the amount of fiber in your diet and consider a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil,  daily. When you do that, you should ramp up the fiber slowly, to avoid getting gassy, and you should increase the amount of fluid intake in addition.  Good luck.

can i take iron, colace, and metrodinazole at the same time?

: Yes, those three medications have no drug interaction and can be safely taken together. For metronidazole, avoid use of alcohol. For iron, use vitamin C, or drink it with citrus like orange juice, to help with iron absorption. If you experience side effects, you'll have to take them separately to identify which one of the three is causing it.
