is clotrimazole 1% solution use enough to treat toe nail fungus? i've been using this for a year now and it worked for one nail but seems slow for the other nail. what should i do now?

: If the cream didn't work it could be that the infection is simply too deep for the cream to reach, or it could be that it's not fungus. There are oral medications, but I always recommend seeing a podiatrist to confirm (or your GP if they're able to perform a fungal culture)

Maybe OK, but why?: The skin (non-vaginal) cream might work, but can't be guarantteed; I'm sure the manufacturer never studied it for vaginal yeast. And you'd need to use nearly an entire tube of skin cream for just 1-2 treatments. Clotrimazole vaginal cream is designed to be effective and generic versions often are cheap. Or consider a single oral dose of fluconazole (Diflucan®), which is just as effective.

what is a us equivalent of triben plus cream (beclometasone topical, clotrimazole topical, neomycin topical), do i need a prescription for buying it?

Accepted Answer

Cortisporin close: The closest prescription medicine is cortisporin.  It has the steroid and antibiotic component, but not the anti fungal component.
If you want to try nonprescription medicines, you would need to buy each component separately.  Hydrocortisone could replace belch, and you can find the other two ingredients as named.

Need better cream: Several systemic antifungals are available (terbinafine, fluconazole, itraconazole), but i generally go with a prescription-strength antifungal cream (ketoconazole, ciclopirox, etc.) before resorting to an oral medication.

Not likely: Topical  absorption occurs but not enough to change bone density in your pulse dose therapy.

Maybe not fungus: Not all that itches is a fungal infection - which is what the Clotrimazole treats.  It may also be from eczema, allergy, or another skin condition.  Unfortunately, these can all look alike and difficult to distinguish from each other even with expert opinion.  Have her try over the counter Hydrocortisone cream together with the Clotrimazole - even for a fngal infection, it will help ease some itch.

See a doctor: It's time to stop trying to treat yourself without a professional diagnosis. There are many possible causes, and most will not clear up with clotrimazole. See a doctor about it. Good luck.

Not likely: Topical steriods are generally safe to use in pregnancy , breast-feeding and with the use of birth control pills. Only if over-used -- too much application for too long a period of time does enough absorption occur to create potential problems.
