Yes: Clomid (clomiphene) is a medication to help people who are not ovulating or not ovulating very often.  It works in about 80% of people to get them to ovulate. It does have side effects though such as ovarian cysts and does increase the chance of having twins.

Ovulation on CC: Now this is a pet peeve of mine. Doctors give Clomid (clomiphene) and do not follow the patients. In order to use this drug correctly one must be followed with ultrasounds. Clomid (clomiphene) is a  terrible, nasty anti-estrogen drug with many side effects-and I use it all the time because it is inexpensive and can help an anovulatory woman. Ultrasound is needed to follow endometrial thickness and ovarian response.

None for most men: Clomiphene citrate is an estrogen antagonist. For women who are estrogen dominant, this can cause multiple side effects as the Clomiphene shifts the estrogen to androgen (male hormone) balance away from the estrogen. In men, shifting that same balance away from estrogen and toward the androgens is not a problem as men are naturally androgen dominant. Most men have virtually no side effects.

Clomid (clomiphene): The transvaginal ultrasound is used to monitor your ovarian ovulatory cysts. The ultrasound helps your doctor decide whether or not to use an injectable medication to cause ovulation. You can use Clomid (clomiphene) without a transvaginal ultrasound. You should speak to your doctor about this.

Check meds: Folistim is Follicle Stimulating hormone. This is a different medication from Clomiphene citrate. Clomid (clomiphene) comes in doses of 50 mg increments. Folistim is an injection and does not come in that dose. Both have risks of ovarian hyperstimulation. Please clarify with your doctor what medication you are using. All of the risks should be covered in great detail as part of the consent process.

Good question: Hi. Clomiphene has been shown to frequently correct secondary hypogonadism (testes must be functional) in hypogonadal men. It's use in men is not FDA-approved, and ergo is "off'label" (a big "so what?!"). There certainly has been no head-to-head comparison between Androgel and clomiphene for safety and efficacy I'm aware of. Clomiphene can be very effective, and apparently safe by available data.
