is there a difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist?

Training differences: The american psychological association accredits doctoral programs in clinical, counseling and school psychology.  Traditionally, clinical psychologists are trained to be able to evaluate and treat all types of patients, even the most severe.  A school psychologist is usually trained to provide psychoeducation evaluations and therapy for students(children and adolescents)but some can do alot more.

Doctor of psychology: Psychotherapy is defined as a therapeutic interaction or treatment contracted between a trained professional and a patient; family, couple or group. It may be performed by psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, school counselors, art therapists, etc. Clinical psychologists  are doctors that specialize in diagnosing psychological  dysfunction; psychological testing; and psychotherapy services.

No: It still takes a medical license to prescribe in california.  A nurse practitioner can "furnish" meds under a physician's supervision.  Most clinical psychologists work closely with psychiatrists or other physicians who can prescribe psychiatric meds.

Drug prescription: Psychologists usually do not prescribe medications, depending on the state regulations. Psychiatrists can provide psychotherapy like psychologists and in addition may be able to prescribe medications.

To become a : Psychologist you need to have at least a master's degree if not a doctorate.  The state of new york now licenses people with a master's degree but most states require a doctorate.  Therefore, you need to complete a bachelor's degree and then go on to earning a minimum of a master's degree.  Check with your state's department of education to know what the requirements are where you live.

just turned 35. im so greatful to have fullfilled my dream of becoming a clinical psychologist,i have a wonderful husband and we have a healthy, beautiful little boy.i daily feel gratitude. also nostalgia of the time i was on my way strikes me.why?

Nostalgia: Once you reach the mountain top it is common to wonder what more is there. The skill set you needed to make sacrifices/study/work are different than those needed to coast &amp; enjoy the view. It may be reasonable to share your thoughts with a similarly trained life coach to help you get past the nostalgia.There are joys in the practice you may not have fully embraced.
