what serious side effects could occur from permanent low dose prophylaxis 250mg cefalexin for recurrent urine infection? it has been investigated and finally in september 2015 put on antibiotics. when i come off them infection quickly back! im 73?

: You are on suppressive therapy for recurrent UTI. There is no long term adverse effect except the bacteria will develop resistance at some time in the future. 
I am surprised that Cephalexin (Kefex) has been effective for several years with that low dose.

is there an alternate way to take prophylaxis for endocarditis during dental procedures? i am in the high risk category.- my dentist is not in for a week. i do not tolerate high doses of antibiotics, is it safe to split the dose to before and after?

: Yes. As long as you are covered with an antibiotic before as well as afterwards and the dental procedures are not that invasive. You could also consult your PCP until your dentist returns.

i was prescribed 300mg of clindamycin 3x a day for 14 days for tonsillitis. does that does mean my cause is really bad? i am concerned with the dose.

Accepted Answer

First: was a culture of the throat/tonsils performed?  Were the antibiotics based on culture results?  Are you penicillin allergic?  The dose and duration of the antibiotic is irrelevant until you can answer these questions of get the answer from the prescriber and if they say "for a viral tonsillitis/pharyngitis" throw out the antibiotics and find a new doctor/provider....or whatever we are....

my daughter was prescribed clindamycin 3x a day morning, midday and bedtime . i am unable to give it to her midday. only when i pick her up at 6pm. is it safe to give her bedtime dose at 10pm?

: That would probably be just fine. Most important is completing the whole prescription.

why is the  iv clindamycin dose more than the  oral dose?

Dose based treatment: Iv clindamysin is usually given for severe, often life threatening infections, whereas oral clinda is given for more commonplace infections.  Worse infections are typically treated with higher doses of antibiotics.

should i still have clindamycin in my urine its been two weeks since i took my last dose and i was taking 2 pills every six hours?

Should be gone: The 1/2 lfie of clindamycin is about 4 hours.  That means that after taking the medicine, 4 hours later 50% of it is out of your system.  After another 4 hours an additional 50% is gone etc.  After 2 weeks, you’re body (provided there are no systemic medical conditions) has most certainly completed eliminated the drug available to your body.

: Most people take clindamycin with no side effects. When they occur, the main one is diarrhea, which usually would begin after taking the drug for a few days. Mild diarrhea isn't serious, but if severe diarrhea (e.g. with cramping) or if any blood, stop the drug immediately and contact the doctor who prescribed it.

when taking clindamycin capsules for bv should i be symptom free on the last day..if not symptom free does that mean resistance or longer dose needed?

Possibly: If not symptom free it could mean that you have clindamycin-resistant strain of the bacteria.  I would see your doctor and discuss possible alternative therapies.  Metronidazole is another choice.  So is the use of probiotics, like Luvena, for example.  Talk to your doctor, consider re-exam to see if clue cells still present.

missed a dose of my clindamycin for tonsillitis, i started them on tuesday, missed tonights dose my stomach is just too upset. am i ok to wait till morning? i feel 95% better but know i need to finish them

Yes: Yes, it is okay to take your clindamycin in the morning. To help with stomach upset, take it with a full glass of water. And as you correctly mentioned, ensure you take all your medication as directed. If you have trouble with future doses, let your doctor know.

UTI: Clindamycin is a very unusual antibiotic to be used in treating a UTI unless it is due to a staphylococcus.  The dosage, assuming the therapy is appropriate, is from 300 to 600mg three times a day, although it may be very difficult to tolerate because of GI side-effects if given orally.
