Your toes are bent downward (flexion) at the middle joints toward the sole of your shoe. 
Sometimes your toes also bend downward at the top joints, curling under the foot. 
Corns may develop over the top of the toe or under the ball of the foot.

Contracture: Each of the smaller toes in your foot has two joints (or knuckles). They are the proximal interphalangeal joint (this is the one closest the main part of the foot) and the distal interphalangeal joint (closest to the end of the toe). When both of these joints are contracted, you have a claw toe.

12 weeks and >: It depends on the surgery, if pins are placed etc. Typically at the 4th week physical therapy may be prescribed, but expect at least 12 weeks for swelling to decrease. Discuss with your surgeon.

Yes: Claw toes or hammertoes are deformities of the toes due to an imbalance of muscles and tendons of the foot. Initially symptoms may be mild and the contracture of the toe is flexible. If left untreated the deformity can progress to a fixed deformity that is stiff and inflexible. Surgery often involved arthroplasty (removal of the joint) or fusion (arthrodesis) of the joint.

Is it infected?: There must be some reason why they want to do this? If there is no infection or something your leaving out there is usually a way to fix a claw toe without amputating. 
Ask what your altrnatives are.
