i have strep throats and was given amoxicillin i'm in extreme pain and it's been 24 hours since i went to the doctor what should i do ?

Benzocaine: It takes a few days for pain of strep throat to improve with antibiotics. In the meantime, you can try an over the counter soothing throat lozenge or syrup; look for active ingrediant benzocaine, e.g. Cepacol®. Or contact your doctor's office; perhaps she would recommend something stronger by prescription. Good luck!

No: Cannabis can be very irritating to the throat and airways. Do not smoke is your throat is already sore.

Viral infection?: Most sore throats are due to viruses, and no virus infection is helped by amoxiciillin or any other antibiotic. It just takes time to clear up on its own, sometimes as long as 2-3 weeks. Contact your doctor if your throat still is sore after another week or so -- or sooner if you have fever or the pain is severe.

Consider: Waiting it out and take cough syrup and throat lozenges. Maybe just a virus which antibiotics don't kill. Maybe allergies - try anti allergy medication

Never do it again: Before starting again get a culture from your throat in the lab or a doctors office in case if it is not right antibiotic you can have it changed . If you start again take a full course that is 7-10 days and never do  stop and start again after a day or a couple days of use because you can develop resistance to that antibiotic and when the time comes you need the same antibiotic it does not work.

Culture: Since you have continued symptoms,  please have a throat culture and evaluation for GERD.

Strep throat: Resolution of strep throat usually comes with resolution of symptoms. So the fever (if present ) goes away, the pain also goes away. If either are persistent, see your healthcare provider.

Yes: Yes, Amoxicillin treats strep very well and would also prevent someone from getting it if they are exposed to someone with strep. There are occasions where the strep is resistant to amoxicillin, but that is rare.

Depdns: For most throat infections, which are usually caused by viruses, you shouldn't take antibiotics at all.  But if you've been diagnosed with strep throat, you should take Amoxil (amoxicillin) for the amount of time it was prescribed.
