is it safe to take citrucel daily and long term? if so, why does the manufacturer say, laxative products, including citrucel with methylcellulose fiber, shouldn't be used for longer than one week unless you're directed to do so by your physician?

:  Yes, it is safe in general. The instruction is just to make sure you are evaluated by a doctor for ruling out some uncommon causes of constipation such as colon lesion such as colonic tumor, neurologic condition or even severe fecal impaction, etc. Remember, high fiber intake has to go along with high fluid intake when treating constipation. Take care.

how much fiber can citrucel tablets contain?

Accepted Answer

Small: Most people need between 25-30 grams a day.  If you tend to be constipated then you need more.  A "usual" dose from a supplement such as citucel, whether tablet or powder form, have between 4-6 grams.  So someone can not get there full daily requirement from them.  You must change your diet and drink your water everyday.

Accepted Answer

No: Fiber supplements are not digested - that's what makes them fiber. They just sit in your intestines and attract water, helping to soften stools and make bowels regular. Since not digested, no calories or weight gain.  Some may contain other ingredients to make them more palatalbe and tasty (i love the fiber brownies!) - then these do indeed have calories. Read container and see if lists calories.

i have ibs. is it safe to take methylcellulose everyday? if not, can you recommend a daily fiber supplement that is safe for chronic use?

Accepted Answer

IBS: If you have IBS and tolerate fiber supplements well you should be able to continue methylcellulose as a daily maintenance supplement. Metamucil is also helpful in many patients with either constipation or diarrhea prone IBS. A gastroenterologist can evaluate and advise you best if you have further concerns.

is it safe to use citrucel caplets daily? i have took 2 caplets daily because my diet lacks fiber and i feel i get conspidated at times. i have celiac, sibo,gilberts syndrome for my medical history. the citrucel bottle says only take for 7 days?

: You can take itdaily but I prefer you consult the doc treating you for those conditions.

ive been taking miralax twice a day for the past 10 years but would like to wean since im prone to low serum sodium . when i cut back even a bit, i have no bm despite fiber and fluids. could i switch to citrucel in am and miralax in evening?

: You can try but I do not see the difference in the overall adverse effects because both laxatives are of the same category, i.e. osmotic laxative. I am not sure how low you sodium is but it could be due to high free water intake which you have been used to for combating constipation. If you cut down free water intake 10-20% sodium level will be up and I hope it won't worsen the constipation.

is soluble fiber unhelpful for constipation? it softened my stool of course, and even made me go to the bathroom, but i always read that insoluble is better, i tried to see if there's any cheap generic citrucel and i can't find any. help?

Insoluble fiber: Produces more stool.Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol. So both are beneficial. Time of day is irrelevant but best to spread out thru the waking hours. More important to prevent bloating, gas and constipation is adequate fluids: 80-100 oz of caffeine free/alcohol free fluids is recommended.

what causes intestinal bloating? looks like i am pregnant. could lose 10lbs, but not really overweight. more fiber? metamucil or citrucel?

Healthy diet: Try eating a healthy diet before resorting to medication. Plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean meat, and plenty of water. Stay away from all sweets, processed food, soft drinks, and fast food. After several days your digestive system should straighten out. If not check with your physician.

: For occasional constipation, I would try the fiber supplement first. This may be just enough to regulate the bowel movements. The fiber supplements are all about the same so whichever is easier for you to get and is affordable would be suitable. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you may want to see your doctor prior to taking any medicine for it to review possible dietary interventions. Good luck
