can i take miralax and citrucel powder at the same time? havent gone to the bathroom in days and im worried. i wont go when im on vacation?

: These can certainly be taken back-to-back.  Be sure to drink plenty of water, at least two cups after the dose, to prevent development of a solid plug.

: Any of these can help regulate bowel function if you have irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, etc. Different persons have different responses to each of them. Discuss options with your doctor; or try them all at different times. Good luck.

ive been taking miralax twice a day for the past 10 years but would like to wean since im prone to low serum sodium . when i cut back even a bit, i have no bm despite fiber and fluids. could i switch to citrucel in am and miralax in evening?

: You can try but I do not see the difference in the overall adverse effects because both laxatives are of the same category, i.e. osmotic laxative. I am not sure how low you sodium is but it could be due to high free water intake which you have been used to for combating constipation. If you cut down free water intake 10-20% sodium level will be up and I hope it won't worsen the constipation.

severe pain possible anal fissure w/some bleeding for 5 months. miralax (polyethylene glycol) softened too much.  citrucel = fissure pain back.  ok to alternate both meds?

Anal Fistila: Absolutely anything that works should be used. The idea is to let stool pass through the normal route and avoid any constipation so the fistula tract stays empty .

: For occasional constipation, I would try the fiber supplement first. This may be just enough to regulate the bowel movements. The fiber supplements are all about the same so whichever is easier for you to get and is affordable would be suitable. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you may want to see your doctor prior to taking any medicine for it to review possible dietary interventions. Good luck

Not really: I would not use any more bulk laxative than the directions indicate.  More is not necessarily better. I suggest good hydration, a balanced diet, and physical activity . Regularity varies from person to person, so don't think you must have a movement every day.  Good luck.

Evaluation needed...: Miralax (polyethylene glycol) is lavage agent; citrucel a stool bulker. Best to seek medical evaluation--rule out metabolic causes of constipation (e.g. Low thyroid or adrenal conditions), distinguish slow versus normal transit constipation, consider rectal dysfunction that may be treatable with biofeedback, check for structural pathology or extrinsic impingement, or intermittent ileus (e.g. Pseudo-obstruction), more.

YES: However, dissolvs best in water.

are prunes and miralax compatible?

Accepted Answer

: Yes.  However, they basically do the same thing.  They both cause the bowels to add water to the stool in order to soften it.  Used in combination, it could lead to diarrhea.
