is there anyway to get my husband who is deteriorating  from cirrhosis & showing signs of  hepatic encephalopathy to go the er, he refuses to go.

Call 911: You call 911. You tell the operator that your husband is deteriorating and going into a coma from cirrhosis.  No argument. Let the mental health and ambulance and police get him to a safe place urgently.

i have cirrhosis with signs of portal hypertension..fluid around liver & spleen pain. is it possible to still have good blood counts which i have?!

Accepted Answer

Yes: There are numerous markers for progression of liver cirrhosis, and platelets / blood counts are just one of them. There are a number of other tests that can be used to determine how well your liver is functioning: PT/INR, Albumin, etc. To answer your question in short, yes it is still possible.

Possible: If you really need to know, a liver biopsy may show liver changes before the blood tests. How many drinks a day for how long? The most important thing is to avoid alcohol from now on.

Signs of Cirrhosis: There are many "signs" or physical findings of cirrhosis. These include: spider angiomata (small spider like blood vessels on the skin, see picture), clubbing of the fingers, palmar erythema (reddening of the palms), gynecomastia (enlargement of the breasts in males), enlargement of the liver and spleen, ascites (accumulation of fluid in the abdomen), jaundice (yellowing of skin) and many more.

It depends: Most cirrhosis begins and progresses without any apparent signs or symptoms.   If you are having pain in the area of your liver,  it might be because of  inflammation within the  liver, gall bladder, intestines, etc.   If pain persists definitely have it checked out.

: It is not feasible to draw any conclusions from a low normal white blood cell count, as this can be a normal variant, and in NO way is a test to confirm cirrhosis.  Would confer with your doctor, and get liver profile blood tests which could guide diagnostic approaches regarding liver health.  A gastroenterologist may be a good resource.

elevated ast=43 and alt=83 levels with diffused fatty liver and slightly smaller liver size. is it an early sign of cirrhosis & how can it be treated?

Manage it: This is worrisome and while this doesn't qualify as any kind of cirrhosis, you could end up with it. I trust hepatitis c, Wilson's, and a few others have been ruled out. Stay trim and fit and ask about meds.

i am 38 f obese with fatty liver. i have lost 42 lbs since march . my hair is falling out. could this be a sign of cirrhosis?

Probably not: Cirrhosis is not usually associated with hair loss.Any time there is a rapid reduction in weight or any kind of illness then we can see hair loss increase for several months. This type of hair loss comes back so not to worry. Good luck on your weight loss.

had ct of liver indicates hepatic portal vein mildly enlarge at 15 cm . is this a sign of cirrhosis ?

Not in normal range: Upper limits of nor\mal is 1.2 cm main portal vein diameter.  Distention may indicate blood not flowing noramlly through the liver.  Cirrhosis is one cause. The direction of flow and waveform on Doppler ultrasound may be helpful.  CT may show collateral vessels, shunts, and other abnormalities. Ask your doctor, about its significance and what other studies might be indicated.
