Benefit vs. risk: If you really have an infection, then u need antibiotics to get better. It sounds like the doctor did not EXPLAIN what the problem was and WHY you need this therapy. Certainly antibiotics and other medicines can have side effects -your doc should be taking this into account with your treatment. I've used Cipro (ciprofloxacin) on hundreds of patients with good effect, but I think you need answers. Call if in doubt

Yes: Cipro (ciprofloxacin)floxacin is a common antibiotic used for eye infection in both adults and children. It is safe for the eyes.  Pediatricians use oral Cipro (ciprofloxacin)floxacin sparingly in children because oral has not been well tested in children and studies indicate that oral Cipro (ciprofloxacin) may lead to joint growth problems as seen in 1 study on doberman puppies.

Do not use it.: This class of medications is not approved for pediatric patients if safer antibiotics are available. A single oral dose of the fluoroqunalones may disable. Prescribing an ophthalmic preparation for otic (ear) purposes is inappropriate. The best treatment for swimmers ear is acidifying the ear canal to kill off the yeast and restore normal flora, like Domeboro solution, which is OTC.

No: Sounds like you have a viral illness, and this will not be treated with a broad spectrum antibiotic.  This is why pharmacists should not be dispensing meds without a doctor's orders.  Would treat your symptoms with otc meds, gargle with saline, take acetaminophen.  You will be better in a week with Ciprofloxacin and in 7 days without it.

Depends on cause: Cynthia, if this colitis is due to a bacteria, there are several other alternatives.  If it is immune (like IBD/ulcerative colitis), then perhaps you may benefit from mesalamine.
