Generally, there are 20 primary or baby teeth and 32 permanent teeth.  A child may be in a mixed dentition state where they have a combination of primary and permanent teeth.

Regular: Brushing and flossing. I recommend flossing first then brushing for five minutes once in a 24 hr period to be sure you get all the bacteria off the cheek side, tongue side, tops, gums & behind the last teeth. My patients who follow this routine do not get decay or gum disease. Don't forget regular check ups with your dentist.

Grinding teeth: Children many times will begin to grind their teeth as their eruption patterns change.  They have many primary/baby teeth that are becoming loose and coming out and new permanent teeth erupting and their bite or occlusion changes all the time.  They tend to grind during this ever changing occlusion.

Current research: indicates that it is due to poor airway. The child needs to be evaluated by a dentist versed in treating sleep apnea, sleep disordered breathing and by a MD to order a sleep study if possible.

Age of flossing: I would suggest use of a waterpik and good brushing is even more effective than the use of floss and brushing.  Either was, when the dentition is complete (not well related to age), that would be a good time.

None: An occasional treat is how i was brought up and that is now old fashioned. There is no doubt that candy in its excesses of today is producing a lot more trouble than just dental decay.

Flossing : Flossing should be supervised by a parent at that age.  I suggest you do it first and then let him do it after you.  Consider using a floss holder if he is not able to get the floss through his teeth by himself.
