Strep test: Some people will have referred pain to their ears with strep throat.  The only way to positively diagnose strep throat is with a strep test and/or a culture.

Acute HIV infection: HIV-1 infection can occur with unprotected sex or injection drug use. 2 - 4 weeks after an exposure, a patient may develop a flu or mono-like illness called acute HIV infection. These symptoms may include fever, lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis, rash, myalgia, malaise, &amp;/or mouth sores. Other symptoms might include N/V, thrush, headache or neurologic symptoms. Duration is 1 to a few weeks. Get checked

Common: There is a network of lymph nodes in the head and neck region.  When you have a cold or upper respiratory infection or strep, sometimes they become more prominent.  They go back to normal in time.  Just keep an eye on it.  If it rapidly enlarges, becomes red, hot, tender, get it checked out.

Accepted Answer

Not good: Some people do not absorb oral antibiotics very well. You may need to get some shots of antibiotic, IV doses. May also need to make sure you don't have mono at your age. This can cause false positives with some strep tests and would not get better with antibiotics. Especially with "pus" and "infected lymph node" this is a consideration.

: I assume your rapid throat culture demonstrated strep. Did you have any other respiratory tract symptoms in addition to a sore throat?  If so, an accompanying viral infection may also have been present. This would be unaffected by antibiotics and your current symptoms may be due to the viral component of illness with some ongoing inflammation. I'd give this a few more days before seeing the MD aga

Occasional not comon: Certain strains of the untreated strep germ can trigger formation of cross reactive antibodies.Their primary target would be the strep germ, but for unknown reasons they attack some of the kidney tissue as if it were strep.Damage to the tissue produces glomerulonephritis.

Avoidance: Avoid direct contact with her saliva or where inadvertent transfer of the material may have occurred until she has been on treatment 24-48 hrs.Use hand sanitizer or good  hand washing to decontaminate your hands. Avoid drink sharing or other similar practices. Attack rates in family contact can vary from a high of 1/4 to a low of 1/32 bases on these variables.

Hard to say: I wouldn't think about a "look" of strep in the throat.  It can be hard to predict sometimes by looking.  Instead, if a child has a sore throat with a fever in the absence of cold symptoms like cough and runny nose, they should be checked for strep.  Whether or not they have tonsils, they can also have headache, abdominal pain, vomiting and/or rashes.

is it normal for children with strep throat to have shallow rapid breaths while asleep?

Possibly: Any child running fever will experience an increase of their respiratory rate by about 5/min/degree f of fever.
