had pre employment chest xray. under impression: no acute pulmunary process. but under findings: crowded lung markings in the bases and interstitial promience of both lungs. do i have a lung disease?

Accepted Answer

: The findings may represent interstitial lung disease. Viral illness is one common cause, but at your age, IPF is less likely. If you have any pulmonary symptoms, please follow up with your physician and have a lung function test including DLCO and 6 minute  walk test. Watch for signs of shortness of breath and worsening exercise tolerance. Otherwise, this may be followed for changes.

Yes: Chest x-ray can aid in the diagnosis of pneumonia, congestive heart failure, pneumothorax, pulmonary contusion, and aspiration to list a few acute conditions.

my chest x-ray only mentions acute illnesses that are not present. it does not mention chronic illnesses at all. should i be concerned?

Not usually: Most radiologists describe changes on chest X-ray whether acute or chronic. Sometimes normal variations are not mentioned.Sometimes if a pattern was present on previous study without change  radiologist will describe exam as no interval change.

NAD on chest xray: NAD - No acute(active) disease  is a terminology used to indicate that there are no acute ie infections, tumors or any sort of disease process appearing on the chest x-ray.   There may be chronic changes - usually reported separately.      NAD is a good thing

How long does it last?  
Medication helps/worsens?
 If you think it is something you eat/drink/do stop it &amp; see. If better, go back again &amp; retest until u r convinced it is something u should stop. Then stop it.

Discuss with your Drs. You all will figure it out.

my chest x-ray "there are very small bilateral either c7 cervical rib or mildly prominent transverse processes at c7." what does this mean?

There are: Congenital ribs that you are born with that form at the C7 vertebrae. There are normally no ribs there. Sometimes there are these small ribs. The significance is hard to say. Most of the time they are something you see on an X-ray. Sometimes they pinch nerves, muscles and other structures in the neck.

Need more info: All imging results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, you and your doctor should talk to the radiologist, together.     Wish you good health!

Of course, but...: The answer is NO, if a person is healthy and has no special reason to be suspected of having lung cancer. Many things are possible in life. So, as long as a person has lungs, she CAN have lung cancer, but it is not detectable until the tumor gets bigger. Likewise, she can have brain cancer, liver cancer, etc... But, in order to live a happy, normal life, we say NO CANCER when we don't detect it.

does the chest x-ray impression directly say whether there is mass in the lungs or does it talk about only acute diseases?

Accepted Answer

Usually: If mass is present on chest  exam, radiologist is trained to mention this as an abnormality. He is trained to differentiate abnormal from normal findings as well as as sometimes acute from chronic changes when comparing exams. Radiologist should mention all abnormalities that are present in report of examination.

sudden onset of chest pain, right side. went to er, heart good, chest x-ray neg. 
in a lot of pain at night. esp laying down. er not sure what's wrong?

Mgt/workup: I would suggest a further workup by your PCP to include ruling out reflux and other GI disorders. Sometimes the problem is actually GI and not pulmonary/cardiac related.
