Yes, allow : Time for the muscle to recover.....so perhaps one day of working out and one - two days to rest it.

i felt a small pop in my left chest the other day during pushups. the hole in the left chest muscle appears different from the right. there is mild discomfort and no bruising or swelling. could this be a pec tear?

: If you do not see any swelling and bruising and you are still able to move your left arm freely, pectoralis tear is very less likely.

Yes : There are all sort of calisthenics like push ups that build chest muscles. Incline push up with your leg elevated work more on the upper chest  muscles. Dips between chairs works more on the lower chest. Push up with are far apart puts more pressure on the middle of the chest. Hope that helps.

Yes: pain will disappear with time, keep every other day until pain is gone. Then do it daily  Ideally 2 sets 3 times a day of 15 to 25 each
If pain persists X 1 mo get medical attention

Yes: A pulled muscle may hurt with breathing, but many other conditions also hurt with deep breathing such as pneumonia, blood clots, or pneumothorax.  This is a scenario where the history really matters. If you were moving furniture or lifting heavy objects, this may very well be a pulled muscle. But if not, consider other possible diagnoses.

Did this myself: I had a violent sneez last year and had same symptoms as you. Ended up being a pulled muscle but you may want to get yours checked.

Muscle strain: You sound as if you may have strained the muscles between your ribs while coughing.  The only remedy for this will be to rest the muscles by controlling the cough  (use a preparation containing dextromethorphan) and using an anti-inflmmatory/analgesic to control the discomfort.

Docs can only Guess: Pain in a muscle probably relates to use & fact that all muscles, during contraction, block their own blood flow. With more contraction than relaxation, muscle may become sore. Remember: mds did not design or engineer human beings & are taught basics of partially understood body functions with primary emphasis on signs, symptoms & theories of advanced disease (health excellence never mentioned).
