Cervical stenosis: It is very common for the gynecologist to have difficulty inserting a biopsy instrument through the cervix when a patient is in menopause.  This is called cervical stenosis.  If the doctor could get the instrument into the uterine cavity and only retrieved scant tissue, that would imply that the lining of the uterus is atrophic or thin.  If there is any question, you should have an ultrasound.

Ultrasound results?: If this report were for a pelvic ultrasound, it could mean several things.  It would also be interpreted in the context of what symptoms are occurring (irregular bleeding, pain, ?).  The endometrial lining varies in thickness during the menstrual cycle, and is typically thickest right before a menstrual period (day 25).  A closed cervix is a normal finding.

Pregnancy test: You may do a home pregnancy test. If the result is negative, you are not pregnant. if it is positive, repeat it a week later. : Endometrial thickness of one centimeter or greater requires a biopsy to detect possible abnormal cells.  Most at age "58" are not cancerous, but preliminary changes which could lead to malignancy should be treated accordingly. Consult with a GYN physician for guidance.

Okay: It's likely that you're okay. All women have nabothian cysts on their cervix, completely normal. All women have functional cysts in their ovaries, so possibly completely normal there too.  Depending on where you are in your cycle, thick lining can be normal.  No period is not normal, so likely there are some hormonal issues going on.  Don't worry too much, knowledge is power and soon you will know.

Within 1 to 5 days: Once you stop your ivf medications your lining should shed within a few days. If there is no bleeding after 5 days please call your doctor, you may need further evaluation. Take care.

how/why does a polyp keep your endometrial lining from shedding?

Accepted Answer

Blockage: A polyp sits atop the endometrial and usually partially made of endometrial material.  When the endo lining sheds, the part under the polyp cannot shed as the polyp blocks its.  Think of rain falling on a field with a huge thick tree setting in the middle.  The rain cannot really get to the ground under the tree as it is blocked by the tree; sample principle with the polyp.
