i just had a colposcopy done, my doctor said he seen a lot of abnormalties, does this mean i have cervical cancer?

Accepted Answer

No: Many conditions from infections to inflammation alone or other conditions can cause the cervix to appear normal at colposcopy. Most commonly a doctor would biopsy any abnormalities he thought represented cancer and at a minimum repeat the pap smear. 

The most common abnormalities are inflammation and precancerous or dyplastic changes rather than overt cancer.

if your pap smear results have been ascus for 4 yrs and colposcopy is normal could you have cervical cancer one year after your last test?

Cervical cancer: Truly anything is possible but unlikely.  With that many ASCUS paps I would request my slides be sent to a different pathology group for review.

Accepted Answer

Maybe not: Not necessarily.  Cervical cancer is not always visually obvious.  Unless your Gyn did a pap and/or biopsy during your pregnancy, they may not know.  Most Ob/Gyns will do a pap-smear as part of your routine pregnancy care.  Best wishes!

does it mean that it womt cause cervical cancer and it is  ot high risk hpv?

Not cancer: From the National Cancer Institute, a branch of the National Institues of Health (NIH):  "CIN 1 is not cancer and usually goes away on its own without treatment." Conceivably it could progress to CIIN 2, 3, and eventually invasive cancer, but usually not; and will not happen with routine treatment as probably advised by your doctor. Follow her advice.

my pap smear came bback abnormal. it was positive for hpv. i also had a colposcopy done and my doctor said there were a lot of abnormalties, what could be my results?  is there a good chance i have cervical cancer?

Check with Dr.: The reason for doing pap smears with hpv is to prevent cervical cancer. Oftentimes they can find it early enough that it can be destroyed locally. It's hard to tell exactly what your abnormalities are. Follow-up with your doctor and you should be able to find out the specifics of these abnormalities. This is best discussed with your physician.

Not high: The reason we do pap smears is to catch abnormalities prior to cancers.  It is highly important to follow up and get the colposcopy because even though cancer is unlikely it can only be treated / prevented by early inteervention.

does it hurt to have a colposcopic test for cervical cancer?

Accepted Answer

No: The cervix is not directly innervated with sensory nerves.  Any pain you feel there is visceral; that is it is indirect and very mild.  Colposcopy does very little harm and is painless.

i had genetial warts about 3years ago and got them removed. does this increase my risk of cervical cancer if i have to go for a colopscopy?

Accepted Answer

No increased risk: Genital warts and cervical cancer both appear to be caused by human papilloma virus (hpv). However, warts are caused by "low risk" hpv while  cervical cancer is caused by "high risk" hpv. If you are having a colposcopy, then you probably have been exposed to high risk hpv. Having had the warts does not increase the chance that you have or will develop cervical cancer.

i think i have cervical cancer because my mom died of it, i have had 2 abnormal paps in the past 2 years and i have all the  symptoms but tested negative for hpv. the earliest the doc can do a colcoscopy in march 26th. will it spread before then?

Accepted Answer

It should be ok: Cervical cancer is not genetic and therefore just because your mother had it does not put you at increased risk for it.  I am so sorry about your mother.  An abnormal pap with a negative HPV has a very low risk for developing into cancer.  In addition it takes years for low or even high grade pre cancerous lesions to turn into cancer.  Waiting will be ok.

at what age should you be screened for breast cancer or cervical cancer if grandmother and aunt had each at early age in 30s/40s? brca testing?;

Accepted Answer

Screening: The pap smear is the standard screening test for cercival dysplasia/cancer.  You should have routine pap smears starting when you first became sexually active. Mammograms are effective screening tools especially as women age, they are not effective for younger women with dense breasts.  Speak with a genetic councilor about brca testing.  Sounds to me like you should be tested.
