Blood Clot: Thrombosis means a condition of having a blood clot somewhere. Cavernous sinus is a "type of vein" found in the brain. An infection that occurs in structures around the cavernous sinus (sinus infection) can cause a blood clot to form. Some veins, arteries and nerves "run through" this area (see diagram). A blood clot can intefere with these structures.

CST treatment: As soon as cst is suspected, IV antibiotics (vancomycin to cover MRSA & 3rd generation cephalosporin or fluoroquinolone in pcn-allergic) should be started. Once cultures determine causative organism, more specific ab's can be used. If no bleeding complications, blood thinner is added as well as IV steroids, & surgical drainage; if bleeding, no blood thinner is used. —>.
