Have it examined: red spots on both the palm and sole may be something minor like a contact dermatitis or more serious like viral condition or underlying systemic disease.  Don't second guess and delay having it examined.

I think you are on: the right track thinking that this could be Athlete's Foot.  Making sure, probably by seeing a Podiatrist or Foot Specialist, might be your best first step. I can't tell from your question if your soles are also red and swollen or NOT red and swollen. If yes, a rare condition called erythromelalgia might be considered. Consider a Dermatology consult, too. Good wishes:)

Hard to say: Without examining you as you may have two independent problems like plantar fascitiis with athletes foot. 
Are you flatfooted? Or does your foot pronate? Do you get pain on the first few steps in the morning?
Peeling on the bottom is usually athletes foot or occurs after swelling as the skin contracts and sheds epidermis.

Tinea Pedis: It sounds like a tinea pedis or athletes foot. Fungus can be very resistant to medication. Put lotrimin (clotrimazole) AF cream as well as hydrocortisone cream 15 three times a day for a week. Also, dry feet and toes carefully, then apply gold bond powder into your socks immediately after bathing or swimming. Good luck.

Peeling hands, feet: Peeling of extremities may have several causes like after strep infections!, kawasaki disease. Fungal illnesses, psoriasis and a condion known as erythroderma.

The sole is a large : The sole is a large area and many underlying conditions can manifest in pan there. It's really not possible to give you a definitive answer. If you have had pain for 6 months and it is not improving, or if the pain you have interferes with normal activity then I recommend seeing your doctor.  Good luck.

Varies: There are a number of  possibilities, among the more common and sometimes concerning can be a spider bite, particularly a brown recluse spider.  You should seek attention if the area becomes dark appearing or shows any sign of infection such as redness or swelling; or if the size of the area is increasing.
