acute bronchitis? no fever,productive cough started 12/23. rhonchi sound in lungs starting on 12/30, started 5 days zpack. have rhonchi when exhale by mouth. my wife said not as bad.  cough is less productive than it was.  less productive cough ok?

Z pack : Most bronchitis is viral, and not improved with antibiotics. If there is no fever then bacterial bronchitis is less likely. A cough from bronchitis can last for 6 weeks to 3 months.  The best way to evaluate someone for bronchitis or cough  is an in-person examination

Yes: rhonchi are caused by a blockage in the airways or fluid in the bronchial passageway so yes asthma and less commonly common cold can be associated with rhonchi

Accepted Answer

Lung sounds: can indicate many different problems.  Rhonchi are common with COPD, pneumonia, smokers, bronchitis.  Crackles - wet crackles - can be heard with pneumonia and heart failure.  Dry crackles can be heard with fibrosis and interstitial lung disease.

Probably fine: It is possible that the whizzing sound is from your nose or throat. If you do not feel short of breath, dizzy, chest pain or have a cough, it might just be that you have nasal congestion or or large tonsils.

Rales: Crackles when breathing, assuming they are coming from your lungs, can be related to fluid in the tiny alveoli and bronchioles. This can be from many things including changes in surfactin. If your doc has already ordered a high-resolution ct, wait for the results.

i have whistling when exhaling. doctor said lungs sound clear and the whistling is heard over the neck. x rays,  laryngoscopy, pft all normal. causes?

Throat tightening: First one needs to find out if you are tightening up your throat when you are breathing out and thus the whistle.  When this happens next time, relax your lower jaw to see if the whistling disappears. Although the PFT was normal, was it obtained at the time you had the whistling?  If not, then asthma must be considered as well given that asthma is often an intermittent disorder.

Lung function test: Although sinus infection can worsen asthma symptoms, treating the sinus infection alone does not necessarily improve your asthma immediately. You need a lung function test to find out the cause for your respiratory symptoms and be treated accordingly. If your doc can't see you within a day or two, go to an urgent care or ER.

Reflux &amp; wheeze.: With GERD, especially with LPR, the refluxate can ascend from the esophagus into the pharynx, and then down into the airway causing inflammation and, eventually, a wheeze.  It is possible, and we tend to see this in situations where optimal treatment for asthma is still not helping the breathing or wheezing.  Anti-reflux medications would tend to help.
