Likely infected: This could be a simple skin infection or an inflamed lymph node. In either case, an evaluation may be needed. In the short term you can apply moist heat to the area in the form of a heated compress several times a day.If it is a minor issue the body may heal itself. If it worsens it will need to be seen.

Could be many things wrong with the gland, from infection to sjogren's syndrome to a salivary gland stone. If it's due to the gland, it'll probably be worse right after you eat, since that's when the gland is stimulated to contract and release saliva.
