can dry mouth cause tooth enamel thinning? i am a mouth breather while i am sleeping, that is the only time i have dry mouth at night.

YES: Dry mouth, or xerostomia is a common factor in tooth decay.  When your mouth dries out, the saliva that is full of the enzymes and minerals that help to keep your teeth strong cannot do its job because, well, its gone!  try biotene products to get back those important enzymes and minerals, as well as see your ENT or physician to determine if your mouth breathing is caused nasal obstructions.

i'm having dry mouth and nose at night before sleep, and heart palpitation and i suddenly jerk (just in the moment before i fall asleep) then i try again to sleep, and it repeat sometimes many times, until i fall asleep finally. what's the reason?

: Hypnic or hypnagogic jerks are common and benign and they seem likely among many other possibilities. Use of a humidifier by the bedside may help the nasal and mouth dryness during the cold season if having the heat on.

Definitely yes: White tongue can occur when there is a buildup or coating of bacteria and debris on the surface of the tongue due to dehydration, diabetes, dry mouth, medication side effect and mouth breathing. Find the underlying cause and try to eliminate it. If needed see your PCP for check up.

Possible: An estimated 20 - 60% of patients with gerd have symptoms in  throat (hoarseness, sore throat) without any significant heartburn. A failure to diagnose and treat gerd may lead to persistent throat conditions, such as chronic laryngitis, hoarseness, difficulty speaking, sore throat, dry cough, constant throat clearing, and granulomas (soft, pink bumps) on the vocal cords.

have been dealing with extreme dry mouth at night only, and periodic sore throats for past 3 weeks.  condition is causing minimal sleep as it wakes him up at least 6-8 times per night to drink water.  using biotene spray & prescript toothpaste?

Humidifier: People who live in climates with low humidity (esp in the winter) can greatly benefit from using a humidifier  during the night. Prevent dryness by using OTC nasal saline to rinse and open nasal passages to avoid mouth breathing at night.  Avoid OTC cold remedies as the medications worsen oral dryness. Maintain good hydration during daytime.

A thought: Sometimes mouth-breathing at night causes severe dryness. In that case, the best strategy is to treat nasal congestion: particularly causes of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis.  Just a thought.  Otherwise, hydration is the best and most effective strategy.

i have real dry mouth and can't hardly swallow at night .does gabapentin300mg or carb/levo25-100mg cause this and what can i do for it?

Yes and good luck...: Both of these medications can cause dry-mouth.  To the best of my knowledge (i'm a dentist), there are no good alternatives for carb/levo (aka sinimet) and Gabapentin is often used for a lot of very specific uses as well.  Talk to your doctor, but chances are any med they switch you to would have similar side effects.  Your dentist can talk with you about how to prevent decay from  dry mouth.

i have a very dry mouth. i have stopped all medications that can cause it , except lyrica 75 mg which i take at night to help me sleep. i just stopped aciphex. will my mouth ever stop being dry? i live where ragweed is, and am allergic to it, but stopped

Mouth breather?: Stuffy nose? If you are a mouth breather, especially at night, you will have a very uncomfortable dry mouth. Check with md to rule out other issues as well.

i've recently begun to have intense itching of my scalp at night. what causes it  & what is recommended treatment? )i have dry mouth--any connection?

More info needed: Most identifiable causes of itchy scalp are associated with rash, scale, or other visible skin abnormalities. A thorough description or a good look at the scalp would be helpful. Any new hair/scalp products being used? Hard to think of a connection with dry mouth, unless you're using an antihistamine for the itch.

can having a stuffy nose and postnasal drip cause dry mouth at all? also, why does it seem as though the postnasal drip is worse at night, even when i'm not laying down?

: Post nasal drip can be caused by different conditions like sinusitis ,and hay fever ,and dry mouth can be associated with silent acid reflux . Washing  out the nasal passages with saline spray can help if used sparingly. However ,if the underlying problem is not corrected , you may continue to have symptoms , so it is advisable to get an ENT evaluation to diagnose the cause of the post nasal drip.
