Diet: Hbp rises due to eating a diet full of salt and water.  People with hbp have difficulty excreting excess salt and water.  If a person with hbp eats a diet filled with salt (hamburgers or steaks) and fluids (excessive coke or beer), then they will see a spike in their blood pressure because they can't get ride of this extra salt and fluid  normally. Not taking your meds will lead BP spikes as well.

Many things: Stress, anxiety, pain, sleep deprivation, anger, during resistance lifting(some of the highest blood pressure recorded have occurred during power lifting maneuvers), missing blood pressure lowering medications.  Each case needs to be look at in detail to have a better sense of the possible cause(s).

Salt: Salt does cause fluid retention and therefore increases blood pressure.  Very low blood sugar can cause release of adrenaline which raises blood pressure, other than that, I do not know of any interaction with particular foods.

i am aware that blood pressure rises with exertion and emotions, however, mine rises excessively from 117/72 upwards 172/113. high blood pressure runs in my family, could this be the cause of the excessive spikes?

No: Your family history makes you more prone to hypertension than an average person on the street and would not be cause of excessive spikes . You can be helped by anxiolytic medication and beta blockers . See your doctor.

Baroreflex failure: The purpose of the baroreflex control system is to keep blood flow to the brain constant by adjusting heart rate,  microcirculation and heart contractility.  When this fails BP can swing from 0 to 300 but on the average it does not cause high blood pressure but every wide swings in BP.

So normally when BP goes up heart slows and contracts less hard.

If BP falls  rate goes up heart contracts more

Circadian rhythm: Is the normal (about 24 hours) rhythm  of the brain that is controlled by the night/day cycle. During part of each 90 minute sleep cycle we have about 10 minutes of rem or active sleep when the autonomic nervous system (ans)(automatic) becomes active. Your ANS activity is exaggerated and unbalanced and the commonest cause is poor diet, especially all that sugar and sweeteners if it applies to you.

Ocular migraines!: Ocular migraines are a form of migraines that take place in the occipital cortex (part of the brain that interprets/controls vision).  They lack the severe headache as common migraines.  The symptoms are usually all or mostly visual and are typically described as flashing of light or ziz-zag lights in the vision.  They usually last less than 30 minutes and affect the vision out of both eyes.

Fast heartbeat: Yes. It sometimes happens but by itself is not a true allergy but a sensitivity or inbtolerance.

can brain damage due to temporary spike in blood pressure cause hypertension i had temporary spike in bp 160/100 it had effected brain too much i can feel will this go away once brain is normal i'm currently on meds?

Accepted Answer

: No, only does chronic hypertension (year after year) cause irreversible brain damage but rarely in acute case unless you suffer a stroke due to the hypertensive crisis. Severe hypertensive crisis may cause neurologic symptoms such as confusion, blurred vision, convulsion, etc. but those usually resolve without residual damages if treated appropriately. BP of 160/100 rarely causes any acute issue.
