hi i have a question! can chiari malformation in back of neck cause little head shaking when i turn my head left and right? or can my mild concussion symptoms come back couple years later?

: Symptoms from this malformation vary depending on the portion of brain affected. Concussion symptoms are immediate and do not generally recur years later. Pl see your neuro doc.

No: You may have an independent reason for shaking of the head but nystagmus and head shaking are independent issues and do not cause each other.

Accepted Answer

No: There are a number of causes of shaking head including Parkinson's and a number of items termed essential tremor.  The eye motion mechanism will stabilize the vision so nystagmus will not occur and the work will not appear to be shaking with these conditions.

Head tremor: Essential tremor is worsened by emotion, exercise, and fatigue.  Also by attempting to keep the limb steady. The tremor can disappear when the head is supported.  It may disappear with walking.  It may stay isolated to the head for decades - without involving the arms.

Depends: In an infant, shaking the head can be catastrophic. In adults the mere act of shaking your own head willfully is not likely to cause harm. Now if someone else physically ; aggressively shakes your head, this may cause injury to neck and brain, particularly in elderly individuals. A case in point is the brain trauma that occurs in sports with repetitive sudden jars to the head (soccer, football).

is it possible to cause a brain bleed by shaking my head too hard?

Accepted Answer

Not likely: In a healthy adult, it is not likely to cause a brain bleed. This is not the case in an infant as in the shaken baby syndrome, where vigorous shaking causes a brain bleed.

i randomly began shaking from head to toe. there was no apparent reason for it. what does this mean and should i be worried?

Accepted Answer

Be checked: Not so much worried, but I would certainly be thoroughly checked.   It could be something as simple as hypoglycemia, for example.

a few weeks ago i suffered a concussion from a biking acident. i have tourettes and a week after my acident i developed a kinda violent head shaking tic and im wondering if that can make my concussion worse or cause permanent damage?

: The head trauma could indeed exacerbate temporarily the Tourette issues, but in the absence of significant structural brain damage, it is quite unlikely that there will be chronic deterioration of the movement disorder.

: If extreme, it may, although not likely. Shesr forces associated with acceleration and deceleration. Watch for signs of headache, dizziness and imbalance.

No: It takes much more head shaking than this to cause a brain injury.  There is some controversy over the shaking head injury theory even in children.
